Director Hal Needham asked Jerry Reed to come up with a theme song for the movie. Reed disappeared for a short time and came back with “East Bound and Down.” When he worried it wasn’t good enough and offered to rewrite it, Needham shut that down immediately, telling him not to change a single note. The song went on to become one of Reed’s biggest hits.

That famous café scene with Jackie Gleason and Burt Reynolds was never part of the original plan. Gleason came up with the idea himself, and most of Sheriff Buford T. Justice’s dialogue was made up on the spot. Gleason also pushed for the Junior Justice character, insisting his sheriff couldn’t be alone in the car the whole time.

Buford T. Justice wasn’t entirely fictional. The character was inspired by a real Florida Highway Patrol officer who was known to Burt Reynolds’ father, who had served as the police chief in Jupiter, Florida.

The movie was a massive success at the box office, finishing as the second-highest-grossing film of 1977, trailing only Star Wars: A New Hope.

Interestingly, when the script was first written, Jerry Reed was meant to play the Bandit himself. Once Burt Reynolds caught wind of the project, he wanted the lead role, and Reed was shifted into the Snowman part instead.

The film turned the Pontiac Trans Am into a cultural icon almost overnight. Sales jumped from 68,745 units in 1977 to 93,341 in 1978, then surged again to 117,108 the following year.

Even the dog had a story. Burt Reynolds personally picked Fred, the Snowman’s basset hound, because the dog refused to follow commands and felt more authentic on screen.

Jerry Reed slipped in a clever self-reference during one of his songs, joking that he “oughta be in Nashville,” a nod to his already successful music career.

According to Sally Field, there was barely a script at all. Most scenes were loosely outlined, and the cast largely made it up as they went along.

The movie also sparked a nationwide CB radio craze, turning trucker lingo and CB chatter into a mainstream hobby almost overnight.

****ATTENTION PRE-REGISTERED ATTENDEES, AND ANYONE PLANNING TO BRING THEIR PONTIAC TO THE SHOW****

Good Morning, on behalf of DAPA and Patriot Paws, thank you for registering for the 2025 Pontiac Southern Nationals.

As a reminder the show will be held indoors on Saturday October 18th, at the Frisco Flyers Cetner.

The address to the Frisco Flyers Center is 6300 Flyers Way, Frisco, TX 75033.

Load in will begin between 9:00 am CT at the rear of the building.

On the map listed below that is the left hand side of the building.

Cars will be loaded in the order they are in line, on a first come first serve basis.

Our parking crew will not be able to save spaces, so if you have some one that you’d like to park next too, then you need to line up together.

Once inside you will need to disconnect your battery, if you do not have a wrench loaners will be available.

If your gas filler door is not locking or have a release, you will need to tape your gas gap. We will provide tape at the venue.

It is preferred that for any indoor car show in Texas that cars be limited to 1/4 tank of gas or 5 gallons, which ever is less.

Additionally, you will be provided a puppy pad to place under your car to catch any leaks that may occur.

If you need more than one pad, because something at rear of your car leaks as well, please tell a member of the parking crew and an additional pad will be provided.

You will be able to pick up your registration packet and go through classification from 9:00 thru 11:00 am CT.

Judging will start at 10:15 am CT.

During the day, you will be able to tour the Carrington Museum, listen to a guest speaker, see a demonstration from Patriot Paws, purchase a t-shirt from the event and have lunch that will be provided by Sewell.

Awards will be at approx. 3:00 pm CT.

After awards, you will be able to reconnect your batteries, pack up your display items.

Please remember not to start your car until the bay door is open

Lastly, please be patient when exiting because there is only one door and we don’t want any accidents.

Please enjoy the show and thank you again for attending the Pontiac Southern Nationals and supporting Patriot Paws.
