As we roll into December, we are nearing the end of our annual Coats and Shoes Initiative. While the orders are still trickling in, it's safe to say we have helped students in 17 area schools, investing over $25,000 to ensure they are warm this season! In total, we will have provided over 400 Coats and nearly 500 pairs of shoes, plus warm weather clothing!
I received the following message from a school counselor. It perfectly encapsulates why this program is so important and about more than just keeping kids warm. Thanks to all that helped make it happen.
"This December, I had the privilege of witnessing a moment that truly captured the spirit of compassion and community support. While helping distribute the donated jackets, a first-grade student approached me with a mixture of excitement and disbelief in her eyes. She gently pulled on the sleeve of her new light blue jacket and told me that it was the first time in her life she had ever owned a brand-new coat. She explained that, as the younger sibling of an older brother, she had always worn his hand-me-downs jackets that were practical but never truly her own, and certainly never in her favorite color.
Hearing her share this so openly was both touching and humbling. The simple joy she expressed reminded me of how meaningful these donations can be, especially for children who seldom receive something chosen just for them. Acting as the intermediary in securing and distributing these jackets made the moment even more profound. I was able to personally ensure she received a coat that not only kept her warm but also made her feel seen, valued, and special.
Her smile full of pride and happiness was a powerful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can create lasting memories. This experience reaffirmed the importance of our work and the impact community partnerships can have on the lives of our students."
THIS is why we do what we do.
