MSC Internal Discussion number 2026-5 has been released, regarding severe weather likely for the majority of the Lower Peninsula through 11 pm EDT 6/10/26. An internal discussion is issued when MSC meteorologists and staff are monitoring an area of the development for severe weather in the coming hours to minutes.

A squall line currently producing 80-100 mph winds on the south side of Chicago, embedded tornadoes, and 60-80 mph winds elsewhere along the line is progressing onto Lake Michigan. Movement has been steady at 40-50 mph off to the east-northeast. A primed environment with plenty of storm fuel is awaiting this line upon surviving Lake Michigan. Supportive shear and instability values match well with events from the past, and confidence in wind gusts of 60-75 mph seem probable as this line marches across the state, arriving around 7 pm EDT in the Lower Peninsula, and parts of the Upper Peninsula. A few brief tornadoes, and instances of hail cannot be ruled out. Isolated cells out in front of this line are also occurring along a boundary down I-96. Hail, wind, and torrential rainfall is also likely with some of these lead cells. We presume the SPC will be issuing a downstream watch for our state within the next hour.

Technical Discussion
"Current RAP analysis denotes DCAPE values exceeding 1200 J/kg across much of western Michigan, with supplementary surface based instability values exceeding 4000 J/kg. Bulk shear values near 40 knots, and lapse rates around 7°C/km along with the instability mentioned should support the continuation of this squall line across the entire Lower Peninsula, with damaging winds of 60-75 mph likely, along with isolated hail up to 1.5", and a tornado or two. Prefrontal cells also forming along I-96 are being monitored."
