I attended my first Singing Resistance, to resist in solidarity and song. I watched the movement out of the twin cities, and I’m glad it’s spreading around the nation. It’s a beautiful thing.

Thanks to Nina, we now have a .resistance.great.neck on Long Island. Want to join us? Reach out!

I wasn’t the only one knitting a Melt the ICE hat during practice! There were a few in the pew!

Renee Fluker of West Bloomfield, Mich., was a full-time social worker for the state of Michigan when one day her teenage son made an offhand remark that stayed with her.

Her son, one of only a few Blacks on his Detroit high-school golf team, said: It would be great if other Black kids learned how to play golf and afterward attended college.

That thought inspired years of work by Fluker to lay the groundwork and ultimately launch the nonprofit that she runs today, the College Career & Beyond Midnight Golf Program.

Since its founding in 2001, this Detroit-based organization has helped some 2,000 Black high-school students develop important life skills and attend college—while learning to play golf.

At first she struggled to find students. What eventually worked, Fluker says, was offering free pizza at a community center. Along with their pizza, the students got free golf lessons and listened to talks about college and careers.

“Playing golf at night is impossible unless someone shines a light,” says the 69-year-old Fluker, explaining the nonprofit’s name. “That’s exactly what we do, we use golf to illuminate possibilities, helping young people see a brighter future.”
