Governor Josh Shapiro has shared an open letter to the Pennsylvania disability community restating his commitment to protecting their rights and independence in the wake of recent federal actions. It reads, in part, “I have your back and as long as I am Governor, my Administration will work to ensure that you can live, work, and participate in the community of your choosing. Since I became Governor three and a half years ago, my Administration has worked to protect and expand disability rights. A key part of that work has been ensuring that Pennsylvanians with disabilities are treated with dignity and respect and have a say in the decisions that affect their life.”

Access to choice of living in communities has been dealt a bad hand recently, this commitment from Governor Shapiro speaks volumes.

Michele and I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Isabella Young today as S.A.F.E., was selected for their donation.

Luzerne county and the NE have so many great individuals making a difference! Isabella is showing us all what capable, thoughtful, community minded and creative looks like.

Isabella Young, a student in the Crestwood Area School District, a longtime pin collector, and because of her love for pins, her family purchased a pin-making machine, which allows her to make custom-made pins for local organizations and businesses. And – through her “Pin It 4ward” program and from the sales of her pins – she supports local charities and community initiatives.

Established through The Luzerne Foundation, Pin It 4ward allows Isabella to make a meaningful difference in the community and support things that are important to her, such as promoting inclusion, compassion, and opportunity for others.

July is Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride is an empowering movement that celebrates disability as a natural part of human diversity. It encourages individuals to embrace their identity without shame. It is important because it challenges deeply rooted ableism, reclaims disabled joy, and advocates for true structural equity.

What is Disability Pride?

Disability Pride goes far beyond a simple medical diagnosis. It rejects the old narrative that disabilities are "flaws" or tragedies that need to be hidden. Instead, it acknowledges that:

Disability is an Identity: Just like race, gender, or cultural heritage, having a disability is an essential part of a person's story.

Disability is a Culture: It represents a shared history of resilience, unique ways of interacting with the world, and a strong sense of community.

Why is it Important?

Embracing Disability Pride helps reshape how society functions and interacts with disabled individuals. It matters because it:

Breaks Down Stigmas: It replaces pity and shame with visibility and understanding. When disabled individuals share their authentic stories, they dismantle stereotypes.

Drives Meaningful Change: Visibility leads to action. It reminds communities that accessibility and inclusion are human rights, not just architectural or digital afterthoughts.

Combats Ableism: By openly celebrating disabled joy and strength, the community pushes back against systemic ableism and internal shame.

The History Behind the Movement

The concept of Disability Pride is celebrated every July to commemorate the signing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. Today, it is a global celebration that honors the history, contributions, and ongoing fight for civil rights for people with disabilities.

All the best,
