"There is no "I" in Team"
A testimonial by Amanda Vanderbilt, Rapid Re-housing Advocate
When we first learned about this client, it wasn’t through a formal referral — it was through one of our own board members connected to a local food delivery program. He had quietly fallen into crisis.
For 56 days, he had been without his Social Security income.
For three months, he had been without a phone. His apartment had experienced a fire, leading to structural damage and added financial stress.
With no income and no way to communicate, he quickly fell behind on rent and received a 10-day vacate notice. His housing was at immediate risk.
After conducting a rapid assessment, we uncovered the root of the issue: his Social Security payment card had been mailed out but returned as undeliverable. Without access to his funds, everything began to unravel.
We worked quickly together to stabilize the situation:
- Contacted Social Security to resolve the returned card issue
- Ensured a new, working payment card was secured
- Verified and updated his Social Security benefit amount
- Paid the 10-day “pay and stay” amount to stop the eviction process
- Negotiated a payment arrangement with the landlord for fire-related damages
- Set up automatic payments, including damage fees, to prevent future disruption
Beyond housing, we focused on rebuilding essential stability:
- Secured a phone so he can now communicate reliably
- Helped him reestablish contact with his mother in Michigan — something he deeply values and now does weekly
- Reviewed and clarified his rental calculations to ensure accuracy
- Addressed expired identification and vehicle tags
- With his determination, he walked dogs to earn money and successfully renewed his license plate
His birthday was earlier in the year — and this year, instead of facing eviction and isolation, he had stability, connection, and a clear path forward. You can donate today to help more members of our community facing similar challenges: https://familypromisehendrickscounty.org/donate/
