First, I want to thank everyone who has so generously donated to Kendra’s memorial scholarship. I’m overjoyed to share that as of August 1, the fund has received $35,000 in donations. We initially were hoping to get to $10,000. Now, we are just $ 15,000 shy of the $50,000 to make it a permanent endowed scholarship. Kendra would be so honored to know her memory will carry on indefinitely. How amazing is that!

Kendra was a bright light in our lab and a constant inspiration. Her ability to tackle complex research questions to make an impact in people’s lives was impressive and she was one of the most talented undergraduates that I had the opportunity to work with… passion for her studies with our group were palpable and unrelenting. We do indeed have the capacity to continue to host a student for an annual internship with CofC and would be pleased to do so in her honor. ... I will forever miss her contagious smile and her quiet, yet unparalleled passion for finding a solution for those with rare diseases.

Kendra passed away on July 6, 2023 from complications from a heart and lung transplant in January of this year. She never made it out of the ICU after transplant. The last year has been a whirlwind. Kendra went from taking the MCATs last summer to prepare for medical school to fighting another uphill battle. Her cancer treatment caught up with her and her lungs failed her. We truly thought she’d make it out despite having multiple complications. We are setting up an internship in her name at the College of Charleston to work in the lab she worked in at Medical University of South Carolina. Kendra was passionate about finding less toxic treatments for disease.

Update…I met Layla and her mom and they ended up raising $700! How awesome is that!

So thankful for Layla! Layla is a 5th grader. She wanted to raise money to help put smiles on kids going through pediatric cancer. Layla baked 250 cupcakes to raise $500 for Kendra’s Call for Komfort!
