A start-up animal welfare organization focused on supporting, creating and executing life-sayving solutions for homeless pets in the U.S., Aruba and Puerto Rico. Currently accepting foster apps from Chicagoland (and extended burbs) as well as Fort Wayne, IN. We are currently based in Plainfield, IL, but have operations in Chicagoland and the suburbs, and we are working on expanding in Fort Wayne, IN. We accept foster applications from the areas mentioned, but in unique circumstances will also accept foster and adoption applicants in other areas of IL and IN. We are foster-based, meaning we do not have a brick-and-mortar facility. Getting a facility is DEFINITELY on our list of to dos (hopefully not too far in the future). We consider ourselves no-nonsense, hardworking individuals coming together to support animals (and their humans) in the most efficient and effective ways. As a start-up we realize we have a lot of groundwork to lay, but we can't do it without your support.

$5 FRIDAY: The Maryland family🐱

Four tiny kittens, one feral mama, and a rescue mission that turned into a family reunion!

Can you spare $5 today?! 🙏

When a neighbor discovered a litter of kittens living outside, there were initially four babies and a mama cat who came and went. Then, suddenly, only three kittens could be found.

😭 Thankfully, all four babies were eventually located, and SAYv stepped in to help (yesterday!).

The kittens are only about four weeks old, still covered in fleas and dealing with ear mites. Our amazing Ops Director, Katie, got them cleaned up, dewormed, and settled in while continuing to support the neighbor with trapping the feral mama.

And guess what? THEY CAUGHT HER! 🎉

Rather than separate the babies from mom before they were ready, we reunited the little family so the kittens could continue nursing while learning to eat on their own. All four babies are now accounted for, and one of their finders plans to adopt after the kitten is medically cleared ❤️.

Meet Mama Maryland and her little crew: Waldorf, Baltimore, Annapolis, and Chesapeake! 🦀

Mama Maryland will be spayed and returned to her outdoor home through TNR, while her babies get the care and attention they need to grow up healthy and find their way into loving homes.

Now, here's the thing about tiny kittens: even a little family of five can add up quickly. Between veterinary exams, testing, vaccines, preventatives, food, litter, and eventually spay and neuter surgeries, the costs keep coming.

SAYv's average cost per animal is $600–$700 across the organization. That means a small family like this can represent a significant investment before everyone is ready for their next chapter.

For this week's $5 Friday, we're asking our community to help us care for the Maryland family and the many other animals counting on SAYv.

M A T T Y 😻

Matrim (aka Matty) is the kind of kitten who can go from sweet little cuddle bug to full-blown chaos in approximately three seconds. He’s handsome, hilarious, and always finding some new way to entertain himself (and keep his humans on their toes).

Matty and his siblings, Rand and Perrin, came into SAYv on 3.31.26 as tiny bottle babies who needed round-the-clock care. Unfortunately Rand didn’t make it 😢.

Their names were inspired by characters from The Wheel of Time, selected by a generous SAYv donor. Matty has clearly been busy writing his own story ever since!

Now that he’s grown, Matty has developed quite the personality. He loves playing, chasing toys and wrestling with his furry friends. He’s also a fan of the broom and Swiffer, because apparently regular kitten toys just aren’t enough excitement for this guy 😂.

For all his antics, Matty really is a sweetheart. He enjoys affection, cuddles, and attention from his people, and he gets along with men, women, children, dogs, and other cats. He’s the perfect combination of snuggly and silly, with just enough mischief to keep life interesting.

Matty must go to a home with another young, playful cat or kitten. He thrives with feline companionship.

G I A R D I N I E R A 😻

🥹 Giardiniera has been waiting for her forever home since shortly after intake on December 8, 2025. Can we change that?

This sweet girl is a roughly 3.5-year-old black-and-white beauty with a few very specific hobbies: toy shopping, bird watching, and convincing humans to hand over the Churu treats 😂.

Giardiniera can be a little reserved when meeting new people, but give her some time to settle in and she’ll show you her affectionate side. She loves toys so much that she’ll climb right into the toy bin to pick out her next activity, and sometimes she’ll even carry her favorites around.

Her ideal home would have a tall cat tree for watching the neighborhood wildlife, plenty of toys to keep her entertained, and people who understand that the best friendships sometimes take a little time to develop. She’s spent her life around other cats, too, so she may enjoy having a cat-friendly companion with proper introductions.

We’d love to see her finally get the chance to settle into a home of her own. She doesn't need anything fancy, just a family willing to give her time, love her for who she is, and keep those Churu treats coming ❤️.

We know that the non-lap-cats can take a while to get adopted, but Giardiniera has been patient enough. Let's get this girl out of the waiting room and into her forever home!

This handsome hunk is Clifford! 🥰

Clifford the Akita is our latest community support case! We came across his owner posting him on local community rehoming pages and learned that she couldn’t afford to have him neutered and get his vaccines updated. We were happy to step in and help!

Whenever we see animals being rehomed, especially unaltered purebred dogs, we worry about where they might end up. While there are absolutely people with good intentions looking to adopt, there are also people who see an opportunity to exploit animals for profit. A young, unneutered Akita can be particularly vulnerable to that kind of situation, and unfortunately, bad actors can be very convincing.

We’re so glad we could help Clifford get the veterinary care he needed while supporting his owner through this process. His bill came to over $300, so if you’re able to chip in toward his care, we’d be incredibly grateful!

This is exactly why we love our Human Pet Support Program. Sometimes, helping an animal means helping the person who loves them, too. We can’t take on every case, but when we can step in and make a difference, we absolutely want to.

And Clifford is still looking for his person 🏡.

This 120lb sweetheart is affectionate, loves his walks, and has plenty of love to give. He’ll need a home prepared for a big, strong dog, with an active lifestyle and slow introductions to any resident dogs. A fenced yard would be a huge bonus!

Well, SAYv hit another milestone over the weekend!

We officially welcomed our first hamster! 🎉💪

Everyone, please welcome Boo! 👻

Boo, formerly known as Dracula until we confirmed she’s a female, landed at Chicago Animal Care and Control as a stray. We thought she was absolutely precious, and one of our directors, Katie, offered to take her in. Shout-out to Katie’s precious daughter for helping with Boo’s freedom ride!

So far, we know Boo is absolutely OBSESSED with running in her wheel. And honestly, can you blame her? She’s already giving Katie a run for money trying to get clear photos 😂.

🐹 A few fun hamster facts!

> Hamsters can run several miles in a single night. Boo may be tiny, but she’s got places to go!
> Those adorable cheek pouches can stretch all the way back to their shoulders, allowing hamsters to carry food around like tiny grocery shoppers.
> Hamsters are natural hoarders. They love stashing food in their nests, so if Boo starts collecting snacks, she’s just following her instincts.
> Hamsters have terrible eyesight but an excellent sense of smell and hearing. They rely on those other senses to navigate their little worlds.

Boo is ready to start the next chapter of her life, and we’re so happy she gets to do it with us!

🏕️ MEET THE HAPPY CAMPERS!

🎂 Birthday: May 17, 2026
🩷 Girls: Acorn, Brook and Carbon
💙 Boys: Coal, Storm and Timber

These brave little campers have already been through so much! Rescued from a trailer park colony with poor living conditions, they arrived sick and needed lots of medication and care. Against the odds, these little fighters pulled through and are now ready to find families of their own ❤️.

🌰 ACORN
Acorn may be cautious at first, but once she knows you, she’s your little shadow! She loves cuddles, being held like a baby, greeting her favorite people and carrying her beloved sparkle balls around. She’s a sweet girl who believes food and affection are the keys to a happy campsite.

🌊 BROOK
Brook is a sweet, slightly shy girl who blossoms once she feels safe. She loves belly rubs, may even give you kisses, and adores playing and grooming with her sister Carbon. Give her some sparkling pom-poms and a little time to settle in, and she’ll show you just how special she is.

🖤 CARBON
Carbon is an affectionate, playful girl with the confidence of a tiny CEO. She loves cuddles, chasing toys and hanging out with her feline friends. She also has very strong opinions about dinner and would like everyone to know that she should absolutely be fed first!

🖤 COAL
Coal is a sensitive, shy boy who needs a little extra time to trust new people. But underneath that cautious exterior is a sweet cuddlebug who can happily fall asleep on you once he feels safe. Win him over with patience, a cozy spot and plenty of lickable treats!

⛈️ STORM
Storm is a quiet, gentle boy who likes to take his time getting comfortable. He may be unsure of new people at first, but with patience and gentle affection, he starts to let his sweet personality shine. His favorite activity? Hunting down pom-pom toys like a tiny wilderness explorer.

🌲 TIMBER
Timber is an independent little adventurer who enjoys doing his own thing but still appreciates nighttime snuggles. He loves food, playtime and carrying his favorite stuffed squawking bird everywhere. Just don't try to borrow his bird without permission. Some camping gear is simply non-negotiable!

All six kittens have fought incredibly hard to get here, and now it's time for their next adventure: finding loving forever homes🏡.

Because they're kittens, each must go to a home with another kitten or young, playful cat so they can continue growing up with a feline friend.

$5 FRIDAY FOR DUBLIN ❤️‍🩹

Remember Dublin? The sweet girl who needed an urgent foster when her original foster mom, Ann, was nearing the end of her battle with cancer? Sadly, Ann passed away shortly after, leaving behind a family grieving an incredible woman and a dog she loved dearly 🖤.

We are so grateful that another family stepped up to help Dublin when we needed it most. They originally agreed to keep her temporarily because they saw how desperate we were to find her a safe place and felt so badly for her situation. They were also already fostering Keko ( ➡️ sayvanimals.org/adopt).

But then Dublin arrived, and they fell in love with her! 🥹 They told us she was an absolute sweetheart and that they would LOVE for her to stay with them. After everything Dublin has been through, we were over the moon to hear that she had found people who adored her.

Unfortunately, their schedules make getting her to veterinary appointments impossible, so we have a new challenge to work through. The good news? Dublin has a safe place to stay. Now we need help getting her the medical care she desperately needs.

HERE'S WHAT WE NEED:
➡️ A volunteer to transport Dublin from Alsip to Naperville Animal Hospital for a walk-in exam so we can officially schedule her first TPLO surgery.

The volunteer would need to stay with Dublin until she is seen and then drive her back to Alsip. We can be flexible with timing, so we can work around your availability!

❤️ SAYv will provide $100 toward your gas and time as a thank-you for helping us get Dublin one step closer to surgery.

🩺 AND THEN THERE'S THE MEDICAL BILL.

Dublin has CCL tears in BOTH knees. She needs two TPLO surgeries, which we will be doing one leg at a time. Each surgery is expected to cost at least $2,000, and that's on top of the thousands of dollars we've already spent on her care and diagnostics.

We are a small, volunteer-run rescue, and medical cases like Dublin add up FAST. We are committed to getting her the care she needs, but we cannot do it without our community.

So, for this $5 Friday, can you spare just $5 for Dublin? Every donation helps us get closer to her first surgery and gives this sweet girl a chance to run, play, and live without the pain of two injured knees ❤️.

🚨 ARTEMIS NEEDS A NEW FOSTER OR AN ADOPTER 🚨

Full disclosure: a HEATED warehouse or barn is A-okay for this beauty!

Remember Artemis? Her story started nearly a year before SAYv ever got involved.

For months, one of our fosters had been trying to help her. Artemis was living in an unsafe and severely restrictive environment, reportedly confined to what appeared to be a small birdcage and, before that, a hallway closet 🤬. Yupppp.... you read that right.

When her owner reported that she was eating much less and barely using the litter box, we knew she needed help. After nearly a year of someone advocating for her, Artemis finally came into SAYv’s care.

For the first time, she got to experience what it was like to actually be a cat. She has a whole house to explore, room to jump and climb, toys, enrichment and the freedom to make choices. She is an incredible jumper and very curious, and it has been amazing watching her discover this whole new world.

But Artemis is also showing us just how much her past has affected her.

She is spicy 🌶️. She clearly has significant trust issues and can become overwhelmed very quickly. When she feels threatened or overstimulated, she may react by going after people. Her foster has done a great job learning her signals and giving her the space she needs, but now Artemis needs someone who is willing to build trust on her terms.

She was also just recently spayed, so we are hopeful that as she settles in and her hormones level out, we may see some additional improvement. Spaying can reduce hormone-driven behaviors, but it won't erase fear or anxiety, so we know she still has work to do.

We are looking for a new foster or an adopter who is prepared to continue that work with her 🙏.

Artemis would do best as the only animal in the home and without children. She needs someone who is comfortable respecting boundaries, reading feline body language and allowing her to set the pace. She may never become the cuddly lap cat someone imagines when they think of adopting a cat, but we believe there is a sweet, curious girl underneath all of those defenses who simply never had the opportunity to learn how to trust.

She didn't get the chance to have a normal kittenhood. We can't change what happened to her, but we can give her a chance to have a very different rest of her life.

If you're an experienced cat person who looks at Artemis and thinks, “I can work with her,” we want to hear from you ❤️.

We wouldn’t be opposed to a heated barn or warehouse.

🎉 Tater has some very exciting news to share!

We're thrilled to partner with Hawk Subaru this October as part of the Subaru Loves Pets initiative! Thanks to a grant from Hawk Subaru, administered by the ASPCA, we're receiving direct funding to help care for the animals here, including pups like Tater.
