Most people see a fire engine at the grocery store and wonder why firefighters are shopping while on duty. The answer is actually pretty simple.

Firefighters don’t get a lunch break where someone else takes over. We remain on duty 24/7 during our shift and can be dispatched to an emergency at any moment. That means we buy groceries each day so we can cook meals at the station, but if a call comes in, the shopping cart gets left behind and we respond immediately.

Cooking and eating together is more than just a meal—it’s part of life at the firehouse. It gives crews an opportunity to train, communicate, and build the teamwork that’s critical when lives are on the line.

So the next time you see firefighters at your local grocery store, know that we’re not “off the clock.” We’re simply preparing a meal while staying ready to answer your call for help at a moment’s notice.

We were fortunate enough to team up with our Brothers from Concord Local 3755 and play in Liberty Townships Softball Tournament yesterday. Teams from Liberty (x2), City of Delaware Fire, Prairie Fire, Orange Twp, and Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, and Jerome/Concord played and it was a great way to spend a Saturday! Congrats to Liberty on their win!
