Interesting interview in the Washington Post on the housing shortage in the US. It touches on the political and NIMBY pressures that Placitas Sage faced when we tried to do a new (old) thing in our community. We still don’t have much chance of downsizing in our beloved community as we age.

There’s a housing crisis in America: high interest rates, not enough homes, and regulations that seem to favor building massive “McMansions” instead of more diverse housing stock. How did we get here, and can we find our way out? Post columnist Heather Long talks to the Atlantic’s Jerusalem ...

Here's what I’ve been doing since election day: gathering (mostly online) with people who care about each other to give and receive the good words that are, as the poet says, bread for the soul.

“Good words” come in many forms. Sometimes they're words of pain, anger, and fear. Sometimes they're words of resistance and commitment to the struggle. What good words have in common is the simple fact that they come from the depths of the human heart—and when we speak them, they deepen the bond of trust that creates community.

Trust has been one of the big losers in this era of American politics—and trust is what we must restore if we are to reweave and transform the tattered fabric of our common life. So let’s begin close in, with people we know to be trustworthy. And let's keep expanding the circle to those who "stand in need" the way we do.

For the past three days, I’ve had a chance to do just that with groups ranging from 4 to 25 to 1,000. It's been healing and empowering for me.

Slowly, slowly, I’m finding ground beneath my feet again. Slowly, slowly, in the lives of my friends, colleagues, and strangers I’m seeing the bright stars V.P. Harris talked about in her concession speech—good people doing going work against stiff odds—stars that are best seen against the backdrop of a midnight sky.

David Whyte has it right: turn off the noise of what people call “the news.” Tune in to the news of the human heart where ground and guidance for the journey can always be found. Exercise the muscle called trust whenever and wherever we can—and then reach out in trust to one more and one more and one more.

No one is going to rescue us, so let's start rebuilding a community devoted to the common good from the inside out and from the ground up. We're all hungry, and we can feed each other.

Speaking for myself only here: I firmly believe that the hate and meanness unfurled by the Trump campaign of 2016 somehow gave permission to behave similarly to those who opposed our effort to build a senior cohousing in Placitas.
Now it is happening again… not to us perhaps, but across the country.
They succeeded in preventing us from building brick and mortar. But they did not erase our community, which has survived in the form of a mutually supportive and caring fellowship.
So take heart, those who are struggling to live in community… wishing you the best from the Placitas Sagers.

Congratulations to Wild Sage Cohousing in Boulder as they celebrate their 20th anniversary! They were a model for Placitas Sage, as we planned our community in Placitas.

Our hopes for a brick and stone (actually framed stucco) community were dashed by denial by the Sandoval County Planning and zoning Commission in 2016. We had been working with the county P&Z Department for several years as we created community. What remains of that is a group of mutually supportive “elders”, some of whom meet weekly for meditation and sharing. A few of the original group have passed, while others had to move out of our local area, because there still is no place for older folks to live independantly here when the big brown house becomes too much to care for, or when one can no longer safely drive.
We remain committed to the concept of cohousing, even though it did not happen for Placitas Sage. Blessings to all who still dream of making their cohousing community a reality.
