Update about missing skiers due to avalanche Nevada County.

AVALANCHE UPDATE 10:40 PM on 2/17/26: The six initially reported skiers who survived the avalanche have been successfully rescued this evening by search and rescue teams with varying injuries. Due to extreme weather conditions, it took several hours for rescue personnel to safely reach the skiers and transport them to safety where they were medically evaluated by Truckee Fire. Two of the six skiers have been transported to a hospital for treatment. The search is ongoing, pending weather conditions. It should be noted it was initially believed there were 16 total persons, but that number has been updated to reflect 15 people who actually went on the trip. No further updates are anticipated this evening.

El Dorado Search and Rescue is proud to provide the Hug a Tree and Survive program. Read the story of Jimmy below.
"🌲 Remembering Jimmy Beveridge — 45 Years Later 🌲
Today marks 45 years since the passing of nine-year-old Jimmy Beveridge, whose tragic loss helped shape outdoor safety education for children around the world.
In February 1981, Jimmy went missing while camping with his family on Palomar Mountain in Southern California. Despite a massive search effort, he was sadly found days later, having succumbed to hypothermia. His loss deeply affected the SAR community and inspired a mission to prevent similar tragedies."

Seasons change and daylight hours are getting shorter, a few good things to remember: Don't go alone, make sure someone knows your location and expected return time, and take some essentials with you.

As the days grow shorter and the sun sets earlier, outdoor adventures require a little extra planning and a lot more awareness. Whether you're hiking, biking, camping, or just enjoying nature, a few steps can help you to stay safe and make the most of your time outside:

🧭 Plan Ahead Know your route, check the weather, and estimate how much daylight you’ll have. Sunset sneaks up faster than you think!

🔦 Pack Smart Bring a headlamp or flashlight (with extra batteries), warm layers, and a fully charged phone or GPS device. Visibility and warmth are key.

🕒 Start Early Begin your adventure earlier in the day to maximize daylight and avoid navigating in the dark.

📍 Tell Someone Always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. It’s a simple step that can make a huge difference.

🚨 Know Your Limits Shorter days mean less time to recover from unexpected delays. Don’t push past your comfort zone—turn back before it’s too late.

Nature doesn’t wait, and neither should you. Stay safe, stay smart, and keep exploring!
