Position Summary
Direct Support Staff provide direct support, modeling, and mentoring to a single adult male (20 years old) receiving Supportive Living Services to support him living in his own home. The client has cognitive impairments and autism. Support can and will be provided in several different ways including, in the client’s home, community, school and in other recreational environments. Staff are expected to understand, model, maintain and value the goals, purpose and philosophies of Supportive Living Services.
This position reports to the House supervisor/Community Support Facilitator.
Supported Living Services or SLS is a regulated service under TITLE 17 and is monitored and governed by both Alta California Regional Center and California Department of Social Services (CDSS). Employees are expected to have knowledge of the regulatory policies and have an adequate understanding of the 5 principles of SLS service delivery.
The 5 principles of SLS include:
1. Individual’s live in their own home safely and securely, choosing what happens in their home now and in the future;
2. Individual’s are self-directed in the way they live now and in the future; they are supported to communicate their preferences and provided accommodations and supports to express their wants and needs and they plan for their own future;
3. Individual’s have a circle of support of their own choosing and who support them either paid or unpaid and who work together for the benefit of the individual;
4. Individual’s participate in their own community as often as they want and in ways they find meaningful now and in the future. They utilize community resources and join clubs, or religious groups that are their own choice.
5. Individual’s have an individualized plan that is centered exclusively on their needs and wants, services are provided in the home and community when and where they choose, and offer opportunities to learn, develop confidence and improve their quality of life.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
The position provides supervision, instruction, housekeeping laundry, meal preparation, shopping, emergency intervention, positive behavior support, and personal care for this individual. Hours vary within a 24-hour, 7-day a week schedule, with part-time (less than 32 hours/wk) and full time (32+ hours/wk) shifts. Duties include but are not limited to:
• Provide community supervision to ensure health and safety of the individual served;
• Assist individual served with planning meals, purchasing and preparing foods;
• Assist individual served with personal care including dressing, hygiene, and other activities of ADLS’s;
• Assist individual served with housekeeping duties and in maintaining home and yard spaces;
• Assist individual served in developing adaptive skills in indepdent living skills;
• Prepare and maintain records including servies and assistance rendered and shift notes;
• Maintain client confidentiality with coordination of medical or mental health services;
• Monitor client progress towards goals outlines in IPP and ASP and submit data on goal tracking;
• Support community inclusion and choice;
• Create and use natural supports and support individual in a person-centered way;
• Teach community awareness to individual while they access their community in various ways;
• Provide community access training including how to use public transportation and services;
• Adhere to all Compass Rose Ranch, Inc policies and program rules;
• Adhere to all Regional center rules and policies and Title 17 regulatatory requirements;
• Attend all required trainings as scheduled;
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
• Must pass fingerprint background check and criminal record clearances through DOJ, FBI and DCSS
• Must have related work experience with specific experience in crisis intervention model and Applied Behavior Analysis.
• Must be at least 18 years of age and have a legal right to work in the USA.
• Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a clean driving record.
• Must pass an employment physical, PPD and drug-screen.
• Within 2 weeks: All new staff must complete a comprehensive orientation upon hire.
• Within 90 days: All applicants must complete first aid / CPR & crisis intervention training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Expected:
• Ability to work independently and display good judgement;
• Strong time management and detail oriented;
• Good communication skills and ability to convey information to consumer and program staff;
• Basic computer literacy and strong written skills;
• Ability to work effectively with individuals with poor impulse control and maladaptive behaviors in a positive and constructive manner. All staff may be required to complete IHSS requirements and be paid from ihhs and/or Compass Rose Ranch
Schedule needed is Sunday 10pm-8am(overnight) and Monday 10pm-8am (overnight). Night shift is not a full wake shift and a private room is provided.
