On Saturday, July 18th, the 11th annual USSA Disabled Veterans Bass Tournament was held in association with Camp American Legion. Thirty-five disabled Veterans arrived at Camp on Friday and were paired with boaters. After a nice meal, Veterans were introduced to their boater. At 7:00 p.m., a meeting was held to go over safety concerns and tournament rules. First-time veterans received a free rod-and-reel combo.
At 8:00 a.m. Saturday, the teams headed out on Lake Tomahawk and did their best to put the biggest bass in the boat. At 2:30 p.m., the teams returned to Camp, where their catches were weighed and the fish released. At 5:00 p.m., Camp American Legion put on another great meal for the participants; then at 7:00 p.m., awards were given to the teams with the biggest largemouth and smallmouth bass, as well as the teams that caught the most weight of a six-fish limit.
Sunday morning, Veterans and boaters departed Camp with good memories of their catch, lake life, their camaraderie with fellow Veterans, and a few bad memories of the “one that got away.”
The event was a huge success and was a way to acknowledge the dedication, commitment, and sacrifice these honorable men and women made in their service to this great Nation.
