To end Historic Preservation Month, I want to point out all of the good that has come from our awareness that old buildings are important. We are fortunate to have East School and The Shastid House as public places that are open for tours. It is easy to mourn our losses but not healthy to focus on them. There are many beautiful buildings and houses in Pike County being cared for by governments, museums and private citizens. There are many more buildings in need of care. If you have an eye on one find the owner and ask. You might find yourself with a rewarding project! The following is taken from the Old House Journal, Volume 1, Number One, October 1973: “Old Houses aren’t for everyone but there is a romance to old houses. An old house is part of the collective memory of man; long ago joys and sadness linger in old halls and dark staircases. An old house continually reminds us that people have lived before us in different times and circumstances. Through the house we share an experience in common with these other people in other times. Keeping up an old house is keeping faith with the past.”
