Saturday, August 23, the crowded lawn of Bousquet Mountain looks to be one of these winning places and times when the weather cooperates and the people really show up. The Common Ground festival is in full throttle at its 3 p.m. start time and will continue to be right up until its 7 p.m. end.

Mill Town Philanthropy teamed up with the Berkshire Family YMCA and Berkshire Botanical Garden to bring 100 kids to Bousquet Mountain for two incredible days of hands-on learning.

The campers went on bug hunts, learning to safely catch, study, and release the insects they found. They got their hands dirty making quick-pickled cucumbers with fresh brine and squeezed their own lemonade from scratch. Using flowers, grasses, and rocks they collected around the mountain, they created their own custom-dyed tote bags to take home.

One of the biggest hits? Many kids had no idea that pickles actually come from cucumbers! They were thrilled to get the recipe and couldn’t wait to try it at home with their families.

For Berkshire Botanical Garden, it was exciting to showcase the natural beauty and learning opportunities that Bousquet Mountain offers, especially since it’s practically in the Berkshire Family YMCA’s backyard.

Our team is honored to have received the 2024 Downtown Pittsfield Community Award, celebrated at the Berkshire Museum last Thursday night alongside an inspiring group of community members, business leaders, and public servants. This recognition speaks to the very heart of our mission and the tangible impact we strive to make every day, but we couldn’t do it alone. As our Program Manager, Andy Wrba, emphasized in accepting the award: “a community thrives on the strength of its collaborations” – which is to say we share this applause with many.
