QUMA Pike County The Pike County Quail & Upland Management Association (QUMA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation of quail and upland birds.

The Pike County Quail & Upland Management Association (QUMA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation, preservation, management, and habitat development relating to quail and upland birds. Our efforts contributing to the welfare of upland bird populations and their habitat also provides benefits for many other forms of wildlife. We also encourage activities that benefit our youth hun

ters by offering scholarships and sponsoring youth hunts. Each year we hold a fundraising banquet. Our banquet this year is March 14th at the former JDL Building, Highway 54 North in Pittsfield. Last year’s funds were used for the following:
• We made our equipment, a brillion seeder and trailer, and John Deere no till drill and tractor available to any landowner to plant food plots or establish wildlife habitat.
• Seed for habitat plantings were provided.
• We sponsored free youth hunts and held a youth pheasant hunt.
• We helped sponsor the Access Food project which encouraged hunters to take a doe and covered all processing costs to have the meat donated to local food pantries.
• We provided a conservation mowing video to all FFA Chapters, 4-H clubs and similar organizations for education on how to mow to promote quail habitat.
• We funded a Habitat Coordinator position and supplied equipment, seed and chemicals to increase habitat opportunities.
• We offered our wild land fire suppression equipment for performing controlled burns to improve habitat. This equipment was also loaned to any Pike County fire department for use in fighting grass fires.
• We increased our Scholarship program for four Pike County seniors wanting to continue their education and majoring in agriculture or conservation.

Part of the funds raised at our banquet goes towards our Roger Frazier QUMA Scholarships each year. This year we awarded 3 scholarships to high school seniors who were pursuing a degree or certificate in an agriculture or conservation field.
Our first featured award winner is Claire Kearns. Claire is the daughter of Lance and Kayla Kearns and will be attending SIU in Carbondale majoring in zoology so she can pursue a career as a Wildlife Biologist. Claire's interest in the outdoors developed through hunting, fishing, trapping and hiking. She plans to return to Pike County after finishing her education. Congratulations, Claire!
