Our microgrant pilot is OPEN! 💙

ReMix Science & Care is now accepting applications from students and early professionals in the Greater Pittsburgh area pursuing STEM and healthcare.
Whether you’re studying to become a vet tech, attending medical school, earning an engineering bachelor’s degree, pursuing a PhD in biology, studying math in graduate school, or preparing for a nursing career, we know the costs go beyond tuition.

A textbook. Conference registration. A flight to present your work. Professional attire for your next opportunity. These expenses can add up and make it harder to move forward.

Our microgrant program is designed to help with those costs and other expenses that may stand in the way of your progress in STEM and healthcare.

This pilot is made possible by funding from Neighborhood Allies through their RISE HIGH Grant. Their support is helping us put resources directly toward students’ needs, and we’re grateful to have them behind this launch!

We’re starting with a pilot to understand the demand, measure the impact of direct support, and build the evidence needed to attract more funding and expand the program in the future.

And because this is our first round, we want to be honest: we don’t know everything yet. Our goal is to keep applications open throughout the fall, but we may need to close earlier depending on demand and available funding. We’ll keep our community informed along the way.

For our next Women in Medicine Month spotlight, we’re proud to celebrate Dr. Christine Leeper, MD, MS, FACS! 💙

Dr. Leeper is a trauma surgeon, surgical intensivist, educator, and funded investigator at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. Her work connects the urgent needs of patients today with research that can improve care for patients in the future.

She leads a clinical and translational research lab focused on trauma-induced coagulopathy, hemorrhagic shock, and transfusion medicine. These areas include the changes in blood clotting that follow severe injury and the treatment of life-threatening blood loss. Her research has a particular focus on developing innovative therapies and advancing care for both adult and pediatric trauma patients.

As Program Director for the UPMC Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, Dr. Leeper also helps prepare the next generation of surgeons, scientists, and critical care physicians. She is passionate about mentorship and creating an environment where learners can thrive professionally and personally.

This spotlight has a personal connection to ReMix: our founder, Skye Clayton, is proud to work with Dr. Leeper at the University of Pittsburgh’s TTMRC and to grow under her leadership.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Leeper shared:
“Medicine has given me the opportunity to care for patients during some of the most difficult moments of their lives while also contributing to discoveries that can improve care for future patients.”

She also credits the mentors, colleagues, trainees, and patients who have shaped her career and is committed to helping the next generation of women build fulfilling careers in medicine.

Our next Women in Medicine Month spotlight is someone whose mentorship has personally touched ReMix’s founder. Meet Alyssa Clayton! 💙

Alyssa is a second-year medical student at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles. Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, her path to medicine was shaped by caring for her great-aunt throughout college and her gap years.

Those experiences gave her a lasting appreciation for what it means to be a patient and a caregiver, and how much compassion, empathy, and being heard can matter during difficult moments.

Today, Alyssa is particularly interested in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and health equity. She’s also helping others find their own paths into medicine through mentorship and student leadership.

At CDU, she serves as:
• Clinical Chair of the Sports Medicine Interest Group
• Medical Student Ambassador to the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
• Mentor through the Health Careers Opportunity Program

Her love of helping others grow extends beyond medicine. As a former competitive swimmer, lifeguard, and swim instructor, she found joy in watching her students become more confident in the water.

Alyssa also mentored our founder, Skye Clayton, during graduate school at CDU. Skye experienced her kindness, encouragement, and willingness to support others firsthand, and we’re grateful for the difference she made.

If you’re wondering about the matching last names, there’s no relation that we know of! Although Skye also has Jamaican heritage, so a family tree investigation might be in order. 😂🇯🇲

You may have heard of an Apgar score. Meet the woman behind it: Dr. Virginia Apgar! 💙

September 17 is World Patient Safety Day, an opportunity to recognize the work of making healthcare safer. We’re connecting that observance with our Women in Medicine Month series by highlighting a physician who transformed newborn assessment.

An anesthesiologist, Dr. Apgar introduced her scoring system in 1952. It assesses five signs: heart rate, breathing effort, muscle tone, reflex response, and skin color.
Recorded at one and five minutes after birth, the score gives healthcare teams a shared way to describe a newborn’s condition and assess changes, including their response to care.

Its contribution to patient safety is practical: a consistent assessment helps teams communicate clearly during a baby’s transition to life outside the womb. The score describes those early moments; it does not predict a child’s future health.

Dr. Apgar’s legacy reminds us that meaningful advances in medicine can begin with making everyday care more consistent and attentive. At ReMix Science & Care, we’re proud to highlight her contributions and encourage the next generation of students who will help improve patient care.

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. 💙

As we continue our Women in Medicine Month spotlights, we’re recognizing her contributions as a physician, medical writer, and caregiver to communities facing exclusion.

Raised by an aunt in Pennsylvania who cared for sick neighbors, Crumpler developed an early interest in helping others. She worked as a nurse before earning her medical degree from the New England Female Medical College in 1864.

After the Civil War, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked with the Freedmen’s Bureau and community organizations to care for formerly enslaved people. Later, back in Boston, she continued treating patients, including those unable to pay.

Her dedication to education also lives on through A Book of Medical Discourses, published in 1883, which offered guidance on maternal and child health.

Dr. Crumpler’s story shows how deeply access to medical education and access to patient care can be connected. She faced racism and sexism in her profession while serving people who were too often denied care.

At ReMix Science & Care, we honor that legacy through our commitment to helping underrepresented students access opportunities in STEM and healthcare.

Meet our next Women in Medicine Month spotlight: Dr. Victoria Jewell-Mahler! 💙

Dr. Jewell-Mahler is a board-certified pediatrician, fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree at the University of Michigan and completed her residency at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

As of August 2026, she has given 25 years of service to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics. Her clinical interests span child development, breastfeeding support, mental health and wellbeing, and education for children, families, and students.

Her dedication to patients has earned recognition, too. In 2019, she was one of only 48 recipients of UPMC’s Excellence in Patient Experience award among more than 7,000 physicians and advanced practice providers.

One of our favorite details from her story? Before medicine, her favorite job was babysitting! That love of supporting young people has grown into a commitment to mentorship. She guides University of Michigan medical students through the HOST network, serves as a local contact for University of Michigan graduates entering Pittsburgh hospital training programs, and works with residents from UPMC Children’s.

Dr. Jewell-Mahler also advocates for gender diverse individuals and has completed training focused on creating a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ patients. When she’s away from work, she enjoys reading, yoga, and scuba diving in the tropics.

Her commitment to caring for patients and supporting future physicians connects closely with ReMix’s belief in mentorship, belonging, and community care.

September is Women in Medicine Month! 💙 This month recognizes the contributions of women physicians, residents, and medical students while bringing attention to the barriers women face in pursuing and advancing in medicine.

For ReMix Science & Care, it’s an opportunity to celebrate their stories and talk about what makes opportunity possible: access to education, mentorship, financial support, and a community that believes in you.

We’re beginning our series with Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell.

In 1849, Blackwell graduated from Geneva Medical College in New York, becoming the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. She faced repeated rejection from medical schools and discrimination during her education.

Her work also created opportunities for others. In 1857, she co-founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children with Dr. Emily Blackwell and Dr. Marie Zakrzewska, providing care for underserved patients and opportunities for women physicians to gain clinical experience.

Her story reminds us that opening access to medicine requires people willing to change the institutions that decide who gets an opportunity.

Throughout September, we’ll highlight women who helped shape medicine and women making their own contributions today. We’re excited to share their journeys with you!

Today, we pause to remember the people whose lives were taken on September 11, those who gave their lives helping others, and those who have died from illnesses related to the response and recovery efforts.

We honor the courage of first responders, healthcare workers, and everyday people who stepped forward to help. We also hold space for survivors and the families and communities who continue to carry this loss.

At ReMix Science & Care, we recognize that behind every life lost is a person who was loved, with a story that matters.

May we honor their memory through compassion, service, and care for one another.
