This morning the weekly interfaith prayer vigil outside the ICE office had a special visit from the Vote Common Good bus tour. The group is criss-crossing the country encouraging people of faith to consider their deepest values when they vote.

"Our Christian faith communities understand the Church of Christ to be the people of God “of every nation,” brought into being by the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, and adopts the term 'the people of God' without excluding the ancient people of Israel (cf. 1 Peter 2:9-10).

Although, in God’s providence, new nation-states have come into being based upon ethnic, tribal, linguistic, cultural and religious characteristics, the word translated as 'nation' in Psalm 33/34 and similar texts should not be applied to any contemporary nation-state, but only to the Church and the ancient people of Israel."

"The Holy Scriptures contain the theme of the conflict between God/good and demonic/evil powers. However, it is important to properly identify the enemy:

“For our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Eph. 6:12 NRSVUE).

Those who oppose us in the political community are not automatically assumed to be servants of evil. Regarding human opponents, Jesus taught his disciples, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven” (Matt. 5:44-45a NRSVUE).

We are kicking off our fall calendar with a program reflecting on our published sermon book, The Root is Holy: Reckoning With Antisemitism as Christians.

Join us on October 20th at 10am by Zoom to hear from two book contributors, Pastor Ryan Pusch and Rev. Charissa Howe. They’ll take us inside their process of preparing and preaching these sermons, from their initial ideas, through their research and writing, to their pulpit proclamation. We’ll explore the Gospel passages that inspired them, discover their motivation for tackling this challenging project, and find fresh inspiration for our own journeys of reckoning with antisemitism from the pulpit.

The hour will include plenty of time for our own discussion, questions, and sharing. If you love the craft of homiletics and want to compare notes with fellow preachers, this is a conversation for you!
