Happy 333rd birthday, Matanzas! 🎉 Our sister city was founded on Oct 12, 1693.

A few things worth knowing about it:
- It's called "The Athens of Cuba" because of its poets.
- It's also "The City of Bridges," with 17 bridges over three rivers. Sound familiar, Pittsburgh?
- It's the birthplace of danzón and rumba.
- Teatro Sauto has been open since 1863.

Pittsburgh and Matanzas have been official sister cities since 1998. Two cities of bridges, one partnership.

Cuba's Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío says it would be an "atrocious international crime" for the US to use military force against Cuba. He added that Havana is still open to talks based on mutual respect.

President Trump has said he doesn't think military action will be needed.

We believe the way forward is dialogue. Stay informed and stay engaged.

📌 If you've ever wanted to travel to Cuba, read this.

As of Sept 30, the US Treasury ended the general license for group "people-to-people" educational travel and for professional meetings and conferences in Cuba. Trips booked before Sept 30 may still go ahead.

Family remittances and shipments of food and medicine are still allowed.

Exchanges between neighbors are how sister cities work, so this change hits that model directly. Share this with anyone who's been planning a trip.

OFAC announces new sanctions against Cuba effective September 30: it prohibits U-Turn transactions, private entrepreneurs' accounts, and expands travel restrictions.

At the UN General Assembly last week, Cuba's Foreign Minister called the US oil blockade "collective punishment" of the Cuban people. Hours later, President Trump said: "Cuba and us will make a deal."

Brazil, Mexico and Pakistan used their own UN speeches to call for an end to the embargo. Every year since 1992, the General Assembly has voted against it.

What would a "deal" have to include for regular people in Matanzas to feel it? Tell us in the comments.

The Cuban foreign minister's comments come days after the US told the UN that ‘freedom will be coming’ to the country.
