Last month, Neighborhood Allies staff, community development leaders, and industry funders gathered to visit the sites of four active real estate projects where our partners shared their visions, work, and progress to date.

First, we stopped by what will become the site of Farmer Girl Eb's new store (we even had time to stop by her current store for a quick snack break!) and heard about the progress that's been made from conception through demolition, as well as what's needed to take the next step.

Then, we visited Herron Village - a mixed-use redevelopment project led by Allen Enterprises & Development LLC, focused on expanding affordable housing and commercial opportunities in the Hill District. It has been in Tonya Ford's family for generations and, as the current owner, she is excited to utilize the space for housing and small businesses in her neighborhood!

We stopped by Butch's Styles & Cuts and met the owner, Mr. Bryant, and his wife. Butch’s Barber Shop has been a staple in the Hill District for over 20 years, serving generations of residents. Michael Bryant recently purchased the mixed-use building after decades of operating his business there. The project includes renovating the residential units above the shop into three updated two-bedroom apartments while preserving the ground-floor space.

Finally, we ended our tour at Black Beauty Bar & Grill to hear about their rich history in the Hill District, the newly renovated restaurant space, and the plans for developing the residential units on the second floor. Lucky for us, we also got to enjoy a delicious lunch while we reflected on the day.

Neighborhood Allies is proud to be a partner to each of these amazing projects. We are thrilled to continue working alongside these local developers and small business owners as they create neighborhood spaces - fresh food stores, barber shops, restaurants, affordable housing, and more! They are the cornerstone of equitable, neighborhood revitalization!

At Neighborhood Allies, Neighborhood Development means co-creating resident-focused solutions that impact affordable housing, small businesses, and placemaking efforts. We believe genuine revitalization only occurs when both a geographic place and its people see positive change.

In 2025, we delivered over 1,300 technical assistance hours to partners and helped to leverage an additional $6.63M towards their equitable real estate projects. We also supported 114 small businesses through funding, advisory services, or education.

Congratulations to Bill Generett on being named the next CEO of The Pittsburgh Foundation.

Bill has been a long-time friend and champion of Neighborhood Allies across many chapters of his leadership, including as a former Neighborhood Allies board member. We’ve also been fortunate to work alongside The Pittsburgh Foundation for many years as both a partner and supporter of our work across Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods.

This appointment is meaningful on so many levels, not only because of Bill’s leadership and deep commitment to this region, but because representation in positions of influence matters.

Congratulations, Bill, from your friends at Neighborhood Allies, and thank you for your continued partnership and leadership in our city.

We’re excited to share some big news: William Generett Jr. has been named the seventh president and CEO of The Pittsburgh Foundation. He’ll officially join our team Aug. 1.

Bill has spent his career deeply committed to our community, turning bold visions into real outcomes. From founding Urban Innovation21 — a national model for inclusive economic development — to leading civic engagement at Duquesne University, his work has consistently expanded opportunities for upward mobility across southwestern Pennsylvania.

"The Foundation's mission to unite people and bridge gaps through philanthropy and partnership is one I hold close to my heart," Bill shared. “I’m eager to develop partnerships with the many Pittsburghers who share in this work and create a future where all our communities have the chance to thrive.”
