KidsVoice Nonprofit legal advocates in Allegheny County, PA, helping current & former dependent (foster) youth

KidsVoice is a non-profit agency that advocates in court, in schools, and in the community for the legal rights of children ages birth to 24 who have experienced abuse, neglect, or are at-risk. Each year, KidsVoice represents thousands of children involved in the child-welfare system in Allegheny County’s Juvenile Court. Our staff advocate for clients in educational, medical, mental health, and so

cial security matters, as well as provide representation for minor criminal citations and for expungement of delinquency records. We also assist our older clients as they pursue college or vocational training opportunities and transition to living independently.

Mental health care can make a critical difference for youth in foster care. 💚 For many children and teens who have experienced trauma, accessing specialized behavioral health evaluations and treatment can be difficult—especially without consistent parental advocates to help navigate complex systems of care.

At KidsVoice, we advocate for youth like Crystal by helping secure evaluations, treatment services, school supports, and placements that prioritize their safety and stability.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re continuing to raise awareness about the importance of accessible, trauma-informed mental health care for the children we represent. 💚

Healing looks different for every child—but one thing remains constant: children do better when they have caring adults who listen, advocate, and show up consistently. 💚

For children in foster care, trust can be difficult after experiencing trauma, separation, or instability. Access to trauma-informed mental health support, positive relationships, and consistent advocacy can help children feel heard, valued, and safe as they heal.

At KidsVoice, we work alongside caregivers, schools, and service providers to help ensure the children we represent have access to the supports they need. Partnerships with local children’s psychiatric facilities also help our clients access critical mental health care and services as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Mental health support for children in foster care goes beyond therapy appointments—it also means making sure children are supported in every environment they navigate, especially at school.💚

Many children in foster care struggle with anxiety, depression, PTSD, or behavioral challenges connected to trauma. Without the right accommodations and support systems, those challenges can impact their ability to learn, feel safe, and succeed in the classroom. At KidsVoice, we advocate for educational supports and services that recognize each child’s unique mental health needs.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we recognize that caring for a child’s mental health also means helping them build confidence, stability, and a sense of belonging in school and beyond. 💚

Mental health challenges don’t end when a young person leaves foster care—in many cases, they intensify. After aging out, barriers like housing instability, lack of access to medication, and missing critical documents can make it even harder to maintain mental health and stability.

Sherry’s experience reflects that reality. But it also shows what’s possible with the right support. With help from KidsVoice, she was able to regain access to her medication, secure stable housing, and reconnect with the services she needed to support her mental well-being.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminded that consistent, compassionate support can make a lasting difference—especially during the transition to adulthood. 💚 💚

Mental health support isn’t just important—it’s life-changing, especially for children in foster care. 💚

Children in foster care are up to 2–4 times more likely to experience mental health challenges due to higher rates of trauma, loss, and instability.

But when children receive timely, trauma-informed mental health care, they are more likely to experience greater placement stability, improved educational outcomes, and stronger long-term well-being.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we recognize that prioritizing mental health is essential to helping every child heal, grow, and thrive. 💚

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to recognize the importance of mental health in every stage of life. 💚

For children in foster care, mental health support is especially critical. Many have experienced trauma, loss, and instability, making access to compassionate, trauma-informed care essential to their well-being.

At KidsVoice, we advocate for not just the legal rights of children in foster care, but also their mental well-being—because mental health is a vital part of helping every child feel safe, supported, and heard.

This month, we’re raising awareness, sharing stories, and highlighting the importance of prioritizing mental health for the children we represent. 💚

In case you missed it—our 2025 Impact Report is available, highlighting the many ways our community is helping foster youth across Allegheny County build brighter futures. This April, during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, we’ve been sharing how awareness and action can change a child’s path—and this work is part of that impact. 💙

One powerful example: our new Youth Advisory Board, made up of current and former foster youth, who are guiding our work with lived experience and real insight. With their help, we’re creating support that truly meets the moment—and it’s already making a difference.
