CPL Lemmon, a graduate of Schenley High School and a noted amateur boxer, served in the Pacific Theater as an Infantryman with the U.S. Army 43rd Infantry Division during the brutal jungle warfare of the Guadalcanal and Northern Solomons Campaigns.
During July 1943, he was wounded in battle resulting in the loss of two toes. Following evacuation to the United States, he was reassigned to Camp Butner, NC, where his artistic talent was recognized and he was re-assigned as a Graphic Arts Instructor for Soldiers as they recovered from their battlefield wounds.
At the conclusion of World War II, CPL Lemmon was Honorably Discharged from Active Duty (Sept 1945).
- Pg 3. An Artist’s Legacy
Upon returning to the Pittsburgh area, Jack devoted himself to family life while continuing to pursue art as a personal passion.
During the late 1940s – early 1950s, Jack created the large mural depicting the raising of the American Flag on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, by the 5th Marine Division, on February 23, 1945. This historic moment captured by his hand stands as a lasting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of all who served.
His painting continues to inspire reflection, gratitude, and remembrance within the VFW Post 1810 - Brentwood Membership and the surrounding community.
