Our team at Outreach Therapy is incredibly happy to announce growth to our leadership.

In a shift to a co-leadership model, we have hired Robert Bowery as Executive Director to develop our organization alongside founder and Program Director Julia Lam, thanks to a generous capacity building grant from the Nese Foundation.

In the past three years as an early-stage independent nonprofit we have demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of innovative outreach occupational therapy outdoors, in shelters, and in housing. From Julia with a backpack alone, to a team of three adding Jordann and Rachael (and a little office!), we bring our evidence-based clinical lens to address the physical, cognitive, mental health, and environmental factors that challenge people’s transition from homelessness to housing.

But with our team of three OT’s, our current capacity serves just a small portion of need in the county. To prepare to effectively and responsibly scale our model, we sought a new Executive Director with expertise in organizational development in homelessness services, willing to meet us where we are as a tiny nonprofit, with deeply held shared values of evidence-based practice and trauma-informed care.

Robert brings to us 20 years' experience spanning direct clinical mental health services, program development, executive leadership, with specialization in homelessness services and cross-sector collaboration. In Seattle, he guided Compass Housing Alliance through organizational development and funding diversification, and has now returned to his roots in Pittsburgh. His attention to detail, pragmatic leadership, compassion, and shared values make him a perfect fit for Outreach Therapy to enter this next stage of development.

This week was Rachael and Jordann's 1-year-workaversary, the start of Outreach Therapy becoming a >1 employee organization. We celebrated by going to 's chili cheese dog art show opening night (delightful!)

These two have evolved us from "outreach occupational therapy is possible outdoors, in shelters, and housing" to "we can develop more amazing OT's that can take this concept and run with it".

We have learned so much together every single day: clinical skills, building a healthy work environment, collaborative mentorship structures, dreaming up ways to develop our programs even more. I'm so proud! How lucky are we to be a team! So much more learning to do and so excited for what's to come!

This week we will be presenting at the National Healthcare for the Homeless Conference in Orlando! Our session is titled, "Housed, now what? Occupational therapy skills training to maintain the transition out of homelessness". We're so excited to share our work and keep spreading the word on how OT is a crucial missing link in homelessness and housing programs.

Thank you to the OT community that came to Equipping for Life earlier this month! Here's a peek at some of the housewarming cards we made for our patients once they get housed or graduate from our program.

Did you know the Arts and Crafts movement 100+ years ago was one of the factors forming the Occupational Therapy profession? In the face of rapidly automating technology (of the Industrial Revolution), early OTs were interested in preserving and valuing the physical and mental health benefits, satisfaction, and skill of handcrafted work. Sound familiar today? We sure think so, because we enjoyed the benefits of some meaningful occupation and connection.

ANYWAY... if you are an occupational therapy professional or student in the Pittsburgh area interested in equity, occupational justice, and (re)emerging practice areas (community-based care, chronic pain, substance use, homelessness, incarceration, mental health, etc), we would love to build community. This may include other events, book/journal clubs for CEUs, or anything else we can brainstorm together. To be in the loop for potential activities, and to give input on potential dates/times, please DM us or email [email protected].

A bittersweet goodbye to Nicole, Anne, Caitlyn and Melanie, our 2nd round of OTD students completing their capstones with us. Making a tradition of giving .mamaot "Ask me about occupational therapy" pins as a sendoff to these soon-to-be OTD, OTR/L's. Not only did they work as a team to improve and validate one of our in-house tools, but also did individual projects on homelessness considerations with trauma, older adults, sleep, and community integration, AND continued growing our shelter group activity programming. So proud that we got to grow and learn together and send off 4 OTs into the world to spread the word on evidence-based, equitable care. 🙂‍↕️

Do you feel burnt out? Or... is it actually moral distress from working in systems that prevent the "right thing" being done for your patients?
Join us for the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association Mental Health Special Interest Section (MHSIS) journal club this coming Monday, 2/23 at 6:30 PM.
We will talk about Loyal et al. (2025)'s article on moral distress in healthcare, the harms of institutional push for individualized self-care, and what we can do about it.
