Scenic Pittsburgh Preserving and Promoting SWPA's Scenic Assets Since 2010

We help communities in SW Pennsylvania protect the scenic resources that make them unique, and fight scenic blight, like careless development, greenspace and tree destruction, oversize billboards and signage, franchise architecture, and destruction of historic assets. We serve the countes of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland.

We need your help to protect the beauty and character of Pittsburgh’s North Shore.

Councilman Bobby Wilson is sponsoring legislation that would allow an unlimited number of giant LED advertising signs throughout the North Shore District. The proposal would permit changeable LED signs as tall as 50 feet and as large as 2,500 square feet. These massive signs would be visible from Downtown and from Mount Washington—and they could operate like electronic billboards around the clock.

Current zoning, with the exception of “high wall” signs on our tallest buildings, does not permit signs higher than 40 feet. The maximum allowable size for billboards is now 750 square feet. A 2,500-square-foot sign would be the second-largest sign in the city, smaller only than the billboard on Mount Washington. Because the legislation does not limit operating hours or message changes, these LED signs could function as de facto electronic billboards—spewing light pollution, distracting drivers, and contributing to visual blight 24 hours a day, degrading the scenic quality of our beautiful city.

You can read the text of the proposed legislation here: https://pittsburgh.legistar.com/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=6872328&GUID=181B2057-78C1-44B8-B580-D9D23FC4C67C&Options=ID%7cText%7c&Search=2024-0959&FullText=1&emci=5bbebb03-81c1-f011-8196-6045bdfe8e9c&emdi=5d19cdd2-a9c1-f011-8196-6045bdfe8e9c&ceid=3647691

The Planning Commission will consider this proposal during a meeting taking place 1:00-5:00 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday, Nov. 18, in a hybrid format (in-person and online):

• Attend in person: 412 Boulevard of the Allies, Lower-Level Hearing Room

A strong public response in opposition to this proposal could prevent it from advancing to City Council. Please take a moment to speak up on behalf of Pittsburgh’s scenic beauty and the North Shore’s unique character.
