This is us 💕

We are Our Voice Milwaukee a chorus for gay men and allies in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

We're silly, thoughtful, and hard-working. We prioritize making every member feel safe. We love coffee, lines in our music like "insert gay hubbub here", and puns (our choir cart is named Cher Necessities). No two members are exactly alike, and that's why we cherish them. Our member and audience numbers are growing rapidly, and our leadership is growing alongside them. We are aware of the importance of choirs like ours. We do not take that lightly. We are focused on how the positive change that happens within our group ripples out into our communities.

We are all of those things because we work together and create a whole that is far greater than the sum of our parts.

Thanks for reading. We hope you get to experience the true joy that is Our Voice Milwaukee someday 🤟

Throughout the history of the LGBTQIA+ Choral Movement in the United States and beyond, music has been the way to create safe spaces, build friendships, heal and grieve during the AIDS crisis, engage in activism, and so much more.

Our history wouldn’t be complete without the pioneering choruses, including the ANNA Crusis Women's Choir (now ANNA Crusis Feminist Choir); the Gotham Male Chorus which became the Stonewall Chorale, the first le***an and gay chorus; and the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, the first to use "gay" in their name.

By the end of the 1970s, many gay, le***an, and feminist choruses were being created across the country. In 1980, the earliest version of GALA Choruses was formed, followed by the first version of Festival "C.O.A.S.T." (Come Out And Sing Together) in New York City In September 1983.

We're so excited for our sibling organization in Australia! We can't wait to go to the Out & Loud Festival to see these performances 🙌

Out & Loud (O&L) is a choral festival for LGBTQIA+ choirs across Australasia and the world. It was created to allow choirs to gather, share experiences, and sing together. With its origins in ‘Camp Music’ which began in Sydney (2001), the festival has been held every 3 to 4 years and is coming to Boorloo (Perth) for the first time in its 25 year history!

In the past, over 300 singers gathered in Canberra (2019) and Sydney (2023), representing LGBTQIA+ choirs from Melbourne, Brisbane, Darwin, Sydney, Perth, Canberra, Auckland, USA, Fiji, Tokyo and Timor-Leste. This year over 450 singers have registered to take part in the 5 day festival!

Singers join to rehearse, learn new music, and participate in workshops covering musicianship, wellbeing and inclusion. Each choir performs their own repertoire at ‘pop-up’ performances around the city and at the end of festival gala concert, where all choirs come together to perform two original pieces from the O&L song competition, as well as a commissioned work.

This year, Out & Loud runs from 16 to 20 November 2026.
