On behalf of the state of Louisiana, Vinton Police Chief Scott Spell presented the Carnegie Medal to officer Dempsey Lavergne III during a ceremony held at Gov. Jeff Landry’s office in Baton Rouge. Lavergne was joined by his family, Chief Spell, and Deputy Chief Mary Pierrottie for the presentation.

Lavergne was recognized for his heroic actions in rescuing a 4-year-old girl and her grandmother from a submerged vehicle in Vinton in July 2022. Entering the canal, he repeatedly returned to the sinking SUV to help bring both victims to safety.

“Sgt. Lavergne represents what it means to serve with courage, integrity, and selflessness,” Chief Spell said. “His actions on that day did not just make a difference; they saved lives.”
