Healing Me: Honoring Her đź’›

There are some losses that never fully leave us, especially the loss of a mother or a mother figure.

At THAW, we understand that grief is not something you “get over,” but something you learn to carry with love, grace, and support.

We are honored to share a beautiful opportunity for women in our community to gather, reflect, and heal together.

This supportive circle creates space for you to:
✨ Be seen and heard
✨ Share (if you choose) or simply listen
✨ Connect with women who truly understand
✨ Honor the love, memories, and legacy of your mother

There is no pressure, just come as you are.

đź—“ Last Monday of each month
⏰ 6:00–7:00 PM
📍 UPMC Neighborhood Center (Penn Ave)

Facilitated by two incredible women committed to holding space with care and compassion.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this space, please share this post. You never know who needs it.

Yesterday was powerful.

We hosted our first RISE Book Club discussion of the year at the Destiny Dream Center , centered around The 5 Types of Wealth, and it did exactly what it was supposed to do… it stretched us.

Before we even opened the floor for discussion, we went back to January to our Vision Board Party. We revisited the SMART goals each woman set, not just to check a box, but to hold space for truth:
✔️ What have you been intentional about?
✔️ Where have you been avoiding?
✔️ What needs to shift, now, not later?

And then the conversation went deep.

This wasn’t surface-level talk. It was reflective. Evaluative. Convicting. The kind of dialogue that makes you pause and really look at your life across all areas:

1. Time
2. Social
3. Mental
4. Physical
5. Financial

We realized quickly, most of us have been taught to chase one type of wealth… while silently neglecting the others.

That’s where transformation begins: awareness.

Out of 18 members, 13 showed up, and every single voice mattered. The room was filled with honesty, wisdom, and accountability.

This is what RISE is about.

Not just reading books.
Not just setting goals.
But doing the work… together.

We don’t just ask questions, we sit in them.

We’ve also included some of the discussion questions we used, because growth shouldn’t stay in one room. Take a moment and ask yourself:
👉🏾Where am I aligned?
👉🏾Where am I out of alignment?
👉🏾What needs to change?

Because wealth isn’t just about money.

It’s about the life you’re actually living.

And shoutout to ELD Designs for catering our event, no pictures, but listen… Salmon, Lemon Chicken, Potatoes, Broccoli, Salad, and assorted cookies. Everything was DELICIOUS!

THAW proudly celebrates one of our own, De’Netta Benjamin-Miller, LCSW, who will be honored with the 6th Annual S.W.A.G. Award (Social Worker Appreciation of Greatness) this Saturday, March 7th. 👏🏾

De’Netta serves as the Executive Director of Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS, Inc., where she has dedicated her career to helping women, families, and individuals rebuild their lives and access critical behavioral health services. Her leadership, compassion, and commitment to community healing are evident in everything she does.

At Transforming the Health of African American Women (THAW), we are especially grateful to have De’Netta as a board member, where she continues to pour her wisdom, guidance, and heart into our mission and the women we serve.

De’Netta, thank you for the work you do, the lives you impact, and the leadership you provide to our community. THAW is honored to serve alongside you.

Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved honor. đź–¤

This month our BYE and RISE Book Club sisters stepped out of the studio and into another world — Sandbox VR.

And listen… it did NOT disappoint.

We suited up, synced up, and fully committed. Some of us were cracking up, some of us got real competitive, and a few definitely got into character like we were in an action movie. It was immersive, intense, and flat-out fun.

What I love most is this: we don’t just work on our goals together… we live life together. Healing. Movement. Growth. Sisterhood. And yes — play. Joy is part of the wellness journey too.

If you’ve been looking for something different to do with your friends, highly recommend Sandbox VR. It’s interactive, engaging, and you will leave with stories.

Check us out in VR. We outside… just in another dimension. 💥🎮
