Today we celebrate the ONE and the ONLY Carmen Alexander as we wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and as we say farewell to her as she continues into her next chapter.

Carmen began her journey with New Voices for Reproductive Justice in 2013 as a volunteer who supported our 1 Billion Rising action to end gender-based violence in Market Square.

After working for the hospital system in Pittsburgh, Carmen became Community Organizer at New Voices. She was instrumental in our health care access work enrolling Black women and LGBTQ+ folx in the Affordable Care Act Marketplace, organizing against fracking in Western Pennsylvania through working with statewide organizations to pass a Human Relations bill to expand civil rights protections for LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians.

One of Carmen’s greatest accomplishments is the launch of our integrated voter engagement program, the Voice Your Vote! Project which she helped grow from a loose program to a multi-state and multi-city operation to engage tens of thousands of Black women voters in Greater Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Northeast Ohio and impacting the outcome of the 2020 Presidential Election.

Carmen went on to become Operations Manager dramatically increasing our administrative capacity and working closely with our President & CEO. After many years in this role and continuing to support and lead programs, policy and organizing, she was promoted to and expanded role of Deputy Director of Operations and Chief of Staff.

There are no words to express our abundant and undying gratitude for over 8 years of leadership and service to New Voices for Reproductive Justice. You have specialized in the wholly impossible. We love you so much and we wish you nothing but success, peace and joy.

Today and through the rest of this year, New Voices is asking for your donations to support our newly created Justice Fund!

New Voices for Reproductive Justice will launch the Justice Fund in January 2022 and it will help to support Black mamas, women, girls and gender-expansive folx who live at the intersections of gun violence and gender-based violence, its devastating impact on families and communities, and the need for basic essential items. Our goal is to raise $30,000 on as initial funding for this effort. Make your generous contributions at https://newvoicesrj.org/givingtuesday.

This Fund will help to cover the expenses for Black women and their families who have been impacted by gun violence and gender-based violence. When these tragedies happen, there is an immediate financial need to cover the cost of funerals, rent, food, childcare, missed work time, therapy, transportation and so much more. In the instance of violence and in general, our constituents need basic necessities such as diapers, baby wipes and menstrual products as well as help to cover expenses related to their health and well-being.

The need for the Justice Fund is dire - gun violence and gender-based violence are a public health crisis. Just this past week in Philadelphia, more than 500 people have been killed as a result of gun violence in the community shattering previous citywide records. Three Black women were horrifically killed within days of each other during that time - all related to intimate partner violence.

New Voices for Reproductive Justice is compelled to expand our current work moving money and concrete material resources directly to the Black mamas, women, girls and gender-expansive folx in the communities we serve - Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

All donations made today on , November 30 until 11:59P will be matched by a generous donor up to $15,000! This match is only available on so please give as generously as you can. Donate today on and double your impact!
