Sheraden history

The entrance to the Corliss Street Tunnel, at West Carson Street, on January 11, 1915, shortly after opening to traffic, as compared with a similar Google Map view from March 2025.

Known as the "Archway to Sheraden", construction of the Corliss Street Tunnel began on December 15, 1913 and was completed on December 31, 1914. The 420-foot tunnel runs from West Carson Street to Corliss Street, and forms part of the border between the neighborhoods of Elliott (left) and Sheraden (right).

Unlike many other Pittsburgh tunnels that required boring through a hill, construction of the Corliss Street Tunnel started with a large cut. The tunnel was built in the cut and then backfilled. It features ornate portal entrances on both ends, including decorative inner walls and ceiling.

See comments for four other vintage pictures showing tunnel construction, the Corliss Street portal and the decorative interior.

The Corliss Street Tunnel, now in its 110th year of service, was instrumental in the growth of Sheraden and other adjacent neighborhoods.
