Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh WC&S Vision: We exist to end domestic violence and create safe spaces for help, healing, and hope.

WC&S Mission: We will strengthen our ability to meet the individual and evolving needs of those affected by domestic violence by investing in the growth of our people, deepening community engagement, and amplifying the voices of all survivors. WC&S Values:

To accomplish our mission, Women's Center & Shelter:

- Provides sanctuary from domestic violence for adults and their children within a supportive community where confidentiality is guaranteed.

- Informs adults of the resources available to them.

- Works with all appropriate organizations/agencies to create resources for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

- Accompanies survivors as they proceed through the legal system.

- Works with children to help them learn alternative responses to violence.

- Educates the public about the needs of survivors who have experienced domestic violence.

- Works for systems change to alter societal attitudes, behaviors and responses.

Domestic violence isn’t just scary. It can be dangerous, even deadly.

According to the CDC, 47.3% of all women in the United States have reported experiencing contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetimes. And behind every statistic is a person who deserves to be heard, believed, and supported.

Remember that how we respond matters. Believe survivors. Listen without judgment. Take their concerns seriously. Respect their decisions. Remind them that the abuse is not their fault. And when they’re ready, help connect them with trained support.

💜 Celebrating Latina Leadership This Hispanic Heritage Month

Vivian Huelgo, J.D., President and CEO of Esperanza United, is a leader in the movement to end gender-based violence.

For more than 25 years, Vivian Huelgo has worked at the intersection of law and domestic and sexual violence. Early in her career, she provided advocacy and legal representation to survivors of domestic violence, including Latina Spanish-speaking survivors. Today, she leads Esperanza United, an organization dedicated to mobilizing Latinas and Latin@ communities to end gender-based violence.

Vivian Huelgo has also spoken about the resilience of the survivors she has worked with throughout her career, saying that survivors continue to inspire her.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate Vivian Huelgo and the Latina leaders, advocates, and survivors helping to create a future free from violence. 💜

Support Can Look Different 💜

When someone is experiencing domestic violence, there is no single “right” way to seek help.

Support can take many forms, and the option that feels right may depend on your needs, circumstances, and goals. Domestic violence organizations, like WC&S, can provide support whether someone is currently experiencing abuse or has left, and whether their goal is to stay or leave.

The Bright Sky online platform and app explores the types of support that domestic violence survivors and those who care about them can seek. Throughout October, we’ll explore these support systems and options.

💜 This and every October, we recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence is more than physical violence. It can be intimidation, manipulation, humiliation, threats, isolation, and other behaviors used to exert power and control.

For survivors, recognizing those patterns can be an important step toward safety and healing.

Throughout , we’ll stand with survivors, amplify awareness, and share resources that can help individuals and families find support.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported. 💜
