Senior Arborist Meg Cerveny has been working with the Sharpsburg Library to preserve a zelkova tree growing in the library's courtyard during renovations. Roots from zelkova trees in the courtyard were twisting together and pushing up pavers in the courtyard, making the space uneven and unsafe. One tree was removed, and structural soil was added to the remaining tree so that the roots are able to grow underground, and not impact the pavers above.

The fun doesn't stop once the trees are planted! Tree care, like weeding and mulching, is crucial for helping our trees survive and thrive.

Join us as we mulch trees along Forbes Ave in Squirrel Hill on Tuesday, June 2 from 5-7 p.m. We'll provide the mulch and the tools, all you need to bring is yourself! Register today to stay in the loop: treepittsburgh.org/sq-hill-mp 🌳

Thanks to Uncover Squirrel Hill and Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition for coordinating this ongoing tree care effort in the neighborhood.

One more Flashback Friday for the month of May! Today, we're looking at Tree Adoptions and Education.

Last year, the Tree Adoption team distributed 6,216 trees at 34 different adoption events and through our direct distribution program! Trees went to 2,101 different households in Allegheny County. When we distribute trees we also provide adopters the opportunity to bring home tree protection. Volunteers prepared 1 mile (yep, 5,280 feet!) of tree protection! Thanks to everyone who volunteered with tree protection preparation, event preparation, and at events as we got trees in the hands of homeowners.

Every season is a busy one for our Education Department, and 2025 was no exception! They held 12 Tree Tender trainings with the public, municipalities, universities, and non-profit partners. They also taught our first-ever Youth Tree Tender training with students at Cornell High School. All of these courses resulted in 227 new Tree Tenders joining the ranks of individuals growing and protecting the urban forest! In total, our Education team taught 163 classes for youth and adults.

Cheers to 2025!

We recently welcomed some volunteers from EQT Corporation who visited our campus to lend a hand (many hands, actually!) in mulching our trail, making it easier to traverse for community members and visitors! Now it's an even more wonderful space to wander through to look at the many arboretum trees along the trail. The Tree Pittsburgh arboretum was conceived, planted, and researched by hard-working Tree Pittsburgh staff (and includes some trees that have been growing on our campus long before Tree Pittsburgh even existed)!

Thanks so much to EQT and the folks who came out to help!

Snow? In May? Nope, that’s just the Eastern cottonwood on our campus!

In early summer, cottonwood seeds drift through the Allegheny River corridor on tufts of silky fiber. A single large tree can release millions of seeds in a season!

The Eastern cottonwood is a native tree, and one of the fastest-growing trees in North America. Early settlers gathered the fluff to stuff pillows, and Lewis and Clark relied on cottonwood bark as emergency winter fodder for their horses in the northern plains.

The Eastern cottonwood is just one of the trees of our campus arboretum! Learn more about the arboretum and see a map at treepittsburgh.org/tree-pgh-arboretum 🌳❄️

Millvale just got a little more "paw-some"! Tree Pittsburgh in partnership with Giving Grove recently teamed up with the Millvale Community Development Corporation, Shaler Area teacher and volunteer Abbey Nilson, and an incredible crew of high school and college volunteers to add some edible life to Rainbow Raccoon Park.

Together, we planted three pawpaw cultivars and two hazelnut cultivars right in the heart of the community. Pawpaw and hazelnut trees are hardy, native additions that support our local ecosystem. It was inspiring to see so many young volunteers getting their hands dirty to build a more sustainable (and tasty) future for Millvale!

A huge thank you to MCDC Board President Brian Wolovich and everyone who came out to help these saplings take root. We can’t wait to watch them grow.

This spring, the One Tree Per Child Program teamed up with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy’s afterschool crew at four Mon Valley Propel Middle Schools for some serious "tree-mendous" education and programming! 🌳

With support from a PA DCNR Environmental Education grant, these students are on their way to becoming local eco-heroes! They learned how the movement of rainwater affects our landscape and why trees are our best defense against storm surges and soil erosion.

The students also got to dig in and helped plant 20 large, beautiful trees at key public spots in their communities! These new additions will contribute to keeping our public green spaces healthy and our soil where it belongs for years to come.

A huge high-five to the students for helping us grow a greener, more resilient Mon Valley! 🎉

Many thanks to the community groups who supported these projects at the planting sites:
-Homestead Frick Park, supported by the Homestead Borough
-Easement area along the GAP Trail and Monongahela River in McKeesport, supported by Steel Valley Trail Council and People's Gas
-Carnegie One Library on Braddock Avenue, supported by the Braddock Borough
-Hamilton Park Playground, supported by Turtle Creek Borough

The Heritage Nursery continued to grow its impact in 2025 by expanding both fruit tree production and seed stewardship efforts. Increased fruit tree production supports programs like The Giving Grove, helping bring more fresh food to communities across the region. The delivery and continued construction of the seed lab support our developing seed bank.

Last year also saw the launch of the Seed Seekers program, a collaboration of the Heritage Nursery and the Education department. Seed Seekers engages dedicated nursery volunteers to support our growing seed collection program, and provides continued education to these volunteers and the general public. Check out the stats!
