Pittsburgh Concert Society is proud to welcome pianist Leslie Amper back to her hometown for a unique and deeply personal program, *Robert and Clara Schumann: Power Couple of the 19th Century*.

“I am excited to present 'Robert and Clara Schumann: Power Couple of the 19th Century' in my hometown of Pittsburgh,” says Amper. “I had a great experience growing up as a musician in Pittsburgh. I am delighted to be asked to bring one of my unique programs ‘home.’”

In this program, Amper intersperses the eight movements of Schumann’s masterpiece "Kreisleriana" with excerpts from letters Robert and Clara Schumann wrote to each other while the work was being composed. The letters offer insight into Robert’s creative process, Clara’s influence and inspiration, and her reactions as she first received the music.

Together, the letters and music guide the audience through the remarkable emotional range of the piece, from moments of extreme passion to deep introspection.

The program concludes with "Stolen Heart," a silent animated film by pioneering filmmaker Lotte Reiniger, accompanied live by Amper’s own compilation score created from Schumann’s music.

Few love stories in music history burned quite like that of Robert and Clara Schumann. On stage, in letters, and in the music itself, their world was full of ambition, artistry, turbulence, and devotion that still feels startlingly human nearly two centuries later.

Join Pittsburgh Concert Society alumna Leslie Amper for a unique multimedia performance experience centered around Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana. Between the work’s eight movements, excerpts from Robert and Clara’s personal letters will be read aloud, revealing their dreams, struggles, and deep connection to both music and each other.

The evening will also feature a live accompaniment to Stolen Heart (Das Gestohlene Herz, 1934), a silent animated film by Lotte Reiniger, with piano music by Robert Schumann performed by Ms. Amper in real time beneath the film’s delicate shadow-world imagery. 🎹

Following the performance, Ms. Amper will host a question-and-answer session from the stage before concluding the evening with additional music by both Robert and Clara Schumann.

We sincerely hope you will join us for this very special event at Carnegie Mellon University's Kresge Theatre on June 7 at 2 PM.
