Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities (PRCC) is part of a national network of Clean Cities and Communities coalitions, designated by the U.S. Department of Energy, working to reduce petroleum use in transportation. By partnering with businesses, government agencies, community organizations, fuel providers and vehicle fleets, PRCC fosters education, collaboration, and projects that support alternative fuels, vehicles, and sustainability in Western Pennsylvania.

Fact of the Week🛢️

Vegetable oils and animal fats can be used as fuel for diesel engines because they can be turned into biodiesel! In 1897, Rudolf Diesel experimented with vegetable oil as fuel for his engines. This fuel was named after him because it was mostly used in diesel engines (which he invented)!

We’re excited to share that Kristen Sabol and James O’Donnell have been selected for the Coalition Technical Cohorts: Building Workforce Capacity!

Led by the National Laboratory of the Rockies, this cohort will help participating coalitions address local workforce barriers and bridge the gap between growing industry demand and the transportation workforce pipeline.

As part of the cohort, PRCC will work to:
🔹 Map our region’s workforce ecosystem
🔹 Build partnerships with community colleges, technical schools, workforce boards, and other key stakeholders
🔹 Develop and implement a workforce development project
🔹 Share lessons learned and best practices with the broader community

We’re proud to have Kristen and James representing PRCC in this important initiative and look forward to strengthening our region’s transportation workforce together!

Fact of the Week⛽

Ethanol has a higher octane number than standard, petroleum-based gasoline. An octane number measures a fuel’s stability. The number is based on the pressure at which a fuel would combust in a test engine. So, the higher the octane number, the more stable the fuel!

Femi joined PRCC with previous experience in nonprofit consulting and as an intern with Ernst & Young’s Business Consulting – Finance team. Passionate about sustainability and community service, she made an incredible impact through her work in marketing, social media outreach, community engagement, and project management.

🎒 Fact of the Week: Back-to-school season means busy drop-off and pick-up lines. This is your friendly reminder to turn your car off while you wait.

Idling uses fuel without getting you anywhere and releases emissions into the air around schools. Turning your engine off while you wait is a simple way to reduce unnecessary fuel use and help improve air quality in our communities. 🌱
