Christopher Wahren Fine Photographs is pleased to announce the opening of the Skylight Gallery 46 Auction, our first all-cased images sale with over 50 lots of daguerreotypes alone, including pieces from two long-term collections. Images are represented from England, France, Germany, Japan and the United States.

Regional American daguerreotypes include uncommon plates by:

- Clark & DeShong of Memphis, Tennessee
- Edward Jacobs of New Orleans, Louisiana
- Preston Cary of Savannah, Georgia
- Andrew Tubbs of Pittsburgh
- John Fuller of Madison, Wisconsin, and
- Mayall, Van Loan, McClees and Root of Philadelphia.

The sale contains several beautiful examples of hand-coloring. Unusual pieces include:

- A stereo daguerreotype of a breakfast or tea-time repast with boiled egg
- A strange copy daguerreotype showing bare plate posed against a rock or brick
- A daguerreotype after Sir Edwin Henry Landseer's oil painting 'Suspense'
- Plates of children with mechanical calendar, a rabbit toy, and rocking horse.

We have a great selection of hard images in this auction, including an extraordinary still-life ambrotype of a celebratory patriotic cream pie with flags, doves and a dancing fairy!

A rare grouping of family daguerreotypes, including a group portrait outside their home and a heartbreaking half plate of the parents holding a post-mortem of their daughter, who is featured in another half-plate daguerreotype taken just before she died.

Additional images include a daguerreotype of a Navy midshipman, a rosewood box with inlaid daguerreotypes, occupational, African American, outdoor and Civil War images.

CDVs and cabinet cards include a rare Arkansas studio, advertisements, basket weavers, a still life of a fraternal pin, a rare daredevil, baseball players, one of the country’s best Masonic Lodges, cats and dogs and musicians, including the original “rock band.”

Additional paper photographs include a college medical class, surveyors and a female chess club.

I am thrilled to launch my website and present my handmade goat skin (Morocco) cases to the esteemed members of The Daguerreian Society and other contemporary makers of daguerreotypes and wet plate collodion photographs.

What started as a passion for conserving 19th-century leather cases for my own collection has turned into making cases for contemporary daguerreotypists.

For three years, I collaborated with 21st-century daguerreian artists who encountered challenges in storing and properly displaying their images. They sought cases that complemented the photographic processes they diligently strive to preserve. With their invaluable input, I have designed and now craft cases made to exceed their expectations.

In the tradition of Mathew Brady, I meticulously craft my cases in the United States. I use acid-free materials that include all paper products, adhesives and 100% mulberry silk or 100% cotton velvet cloths.

I offer cases in the following sizes: sixth plate, fourth plate, 4”x5”, half plate, three quarter plate and whole plate. Cases are offered in black, saddle-brown and maroon, and shipped in acid-free boxes for safe storage of your 21st- or 19th-century images.*

CALL FOR SPEAKERS – 2026 Daguerreian Society Symposium

The Daguerreian Society invites proposals for illustrated talks at our 2026 Symposium in Washington, DC (October 15–17).

Presentations will take place on Friday, October 16 as part of the three-day event.

We welcome proposals exploring institutional collections, conservation and collections management, pivotal figures and studios, new research discoveries, cross-format themes, modern daguerreotypes, and topics connected to Washington, DC.

Academic credentials are not required. We encourage submissions from collectors, independent researchers, curators, conservators, dealers, and historians.

Selected presenters will be asked to adapt their talks into an article for the Daguerreian Society Annual.
