And scene! 🎬 World Breastfeeding Week 2022 officially wraps up today as part of a global initiative to honor, become inquisitive about and reflect upon breastfeeding.
Anytime a choice is presented, natural debate ensues. Often such debates are fueled by personal perspective or lived experiences and for this, it seems imperative space may be held for this to be felt, heard and realized.
It is my sincere desire anytime a decision is to be made, one feels informed, supported, heard and celebrated. This is especially so when it comes to the decision to nourish one’s baby while simultaneously nourishing one’s soul.
Being present this week with parents and families along their personal birth journey may be defined using such words as joy, pain, peace, discovery, loss, concern, celebration. Even then it would be limited…because I would be categorizing emotion which is not my own lived experience but that of another person, which is only theirs to define.
Caring with families amidst World Breastfeeding Week revealed each of the above experiences and only skims the surface of the intimacy and sacredness which is sitting in the boat, alongside or just behind the person(s), in one’s presence.
To be invited to care and collaborate with families and healthcare teams is an indescribable honor. If permits dialog around ways to enhance support, expand care and explore resources surrounding such topics of growth, then I hope it is only the beginning - and not a wrap - of the discussion of and expansion of access to care.
In reflection, I am guided to my colleagues in the Tallahassee region with Melanin Mothers Meet M3 who are continuing the conversation about access to care during National Breastfeeding Month. I am further in awe of the expansion of Milk Drop Depots across the panhandle of Florida in support of human milk banking with Mothers' Milk Bank of Florida 💛 and I am grateful for this shared moment of reflection.
I wish you well!
