The secret is out - installation is officially underway for the new Ravine Garden & Overlook outside the Welcome Center!

This project is another major step in Pittsburgh Botanic Garden’s ongoing efforts to showcase the natural beauty, ecological significance, and floral/faunal associations of native plants from the Western Allegheny Plateau. Installation will take place over the next few months, with opening targeted for July 2026.

Join us tomorrow, May 20, from 1:00-2:30pm for a FREE drop-in talk with Horticulture & Conservation Director Sue Myers covering this exciting new project, why native plants are important, and the Garden’s approach to invasive plant management. Learn more at the link in our bio!

For Day 7 of the Photo Scavenger Hunt, we're highlighting the fascinating variety of different pollinator species found at Pittsburgh Botanic Garden 🐝

Starting with the rockstars of the pollinator world, bees are some of the most effective pollinators on the planet. You likely know the honey bee and the bumble bee, but did you know at least 437 species of bees have been identified in Pennsylvania?

Other flying insects like butterflies and moths are also great pollinators. Common sightings include the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Great Spangled Fritillary. Also keep an eye out for the Cabbage White, Spring Azure, and Monarch butterfly during your visit!

Lastly, we can't forget about the birds - especially during this spring migration season. Pittsburgh Botanic Garden has been teeming with year-round residents and migratory species, like this Orchard Oriole and Ruby-throated Hummingbird that recently returned from their winter travels.

Keep an eye out for pollinators during your visit and let us know if you've seen any of these species or other pollinators in the comments!

For today’s Photo Scavenger Hunt, we’re looking for flowering plants 🌺

Starting out front, visitors are greeted by this Red Buckeye (𝘈𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘢), a small flowering tree with beautiful red upright flower clusters that pollinators love.

Outside the Welcome Center you will find Pansy (𝘝𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘢 x 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 DELTA CLASSIC TAPESTRY) showing off a wide range of colors.

In Hillside Pollinator Garden, Blue Star (𝘈𝘮𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 ‘Starstruck’) is another pollinator favorite with its characteristic clusters of 5-petaled blue flowers.

Happy Mothers Day and thank you to everyone who brought Mom to Pittsburgh Botanic Garden to share some time in nature!

Go find a pollinator for today’s Photo Scavenger Hunt! This Hummingbird Clearwing Moth (𝘏𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘣𝘦) was recently spotted foraging for nectar from Woodland Phlox (𝘗𝘩𝘭𝘰𝘹 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘢 ‘Blue Moon’)

Hummingbird Clearwing moths are a kind of sphinx moth that are often mistaken for tiny hummingbirds because they hover to feed with a stationary body, fast-beating wings, and green body. Unlike other sphinx months, the hummingbird moth flies in both broad daylight and during twilight hours.

Hummingbird Clearwing moths are very effective pollinators, visiting twilight-blooming plants many bees and butterflies miss and using their long, coiled proboscises to pollinate specialized plants.
