Creating a mapping community hosting community mapping events here in Pittsburgh, using OSM (OpenStreetMap) and Open Source Data. Similar groups exist in other cities around the world. GeoPGH hopes to improve OpenStreetMap data and usage for communities and local nonprofits, presenting the technology available, and what can be achieved with open data. GeoPGH will come together for local mapathons,
global disaster mapping, updating ‘missing’ maps, and mapping projects as brought to GeoPGH by local community groups (BYO projects). Events will be held in the East Liberty/Point Breeze North/Wilkinsburg corridor, in provided meeting space. Monthly meetings may include simple meet & greets, brief presentations, “Mappy Hours” at local bars or microbreweries, joint meetings with other mapping organizations in the region, etc. Mapathons would be held quarterly. Mapathons are simple pizza & pop type events to target specific mapping objectives. GeoPGH is a community service first, teaching others about mapping their own communities for benefit to all, connecting people to come together to create something for the common good. In addition, GeoPGH will hopefully facilitate connecting, networking, and socializing for local geospatial & data professionals, hobbyist map enthusiasts aka ‘map geeks’, and the interested public alike. We have this page, www.facebook.com/geopgh3, a simple website - just a template site, very much under construction: http://geopgh.weebly.com... Both will list information about the group, upcoming events, and other social media as we deem pertinent (likely LinkedIn and a free meetup.com type group). LINKS:
