The Black Equity Coalition supports the creation of equitable systems to affirm the dignity of every human being through collaborations, networks, and policymaking. The Black COVID-19 Equity Coalition is comprised of a group of physicians, researchers, epidemiologists, public health and health care practitioners, social scientists, community funders, and government officials concerned about addres

sing COVID-19 in vulnerable populations. Originally focused on responding to COVID-19, the Coalition quickly realized that the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on the health, well-being, and economic stability of people of color highlighted the need to address institutional racism and structural impediments that continue to plague Black, undervalued and underserved communities. Thus, the Black COVID-19 Equity Coalition committed to working on matters of racial equity beyond the pandemic’s eventual end and became the Black Equity Coalition. Our Approach:

We seek to establish a co-leadership coordinated collaborative strategic partnership model, using clustered social determinants of health as identifiers to target needed wrap-around services through local nonprofit organizations. We also plan to optimize the Federally Qualified Health Center’s (FQHC’s) community-oriented preventive and primary health care services for medically underserved and to address the Structural, Political, and Social Determinants of Health for the under-resourced, ethnic minorities, undocumented persons, and other vulnerable populations. In our community, strength is about having the courage to lean on one another. 🖤

The statistics are tough:
• Men are 4x more likely to die by su***de.
• 2-3x more likely to misuse substances as a coping mechanism.
• Up to 74% of Black men exposed to trauma have completely unmet mental health needs.

Traditional expectations of strength, self-sufficiency, and "toughing it out" are holding our brothers, fathers, and sons back from leading healthier, more connected lives.

Stigma and a lack of awareness keep 40% of men from ever speaking out.

Recognizing the signs is the first step toward healing. Understanding you don’t have to carry this burden alone is the next.

Your community is here for you.

Did you know that men in the U.S. die on average 6 years earlier than women? For

Black men, that gap is even wider, with a life expectancy nearly 10 years lower than the national average.

We are focusing on Men’s Health this month to close this gap by promoting preventive care, early detection, and healthier lifestyles. Major drivers like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and prostate cancer hit our community hard.

Knowing the facts is just the first step. Taking action is the next.

Here is how you or the men in your life can take charge today:
🥗 Eat balanced: Cut back on salt, sugar, and processed foods.
🏃‍♂️ Move daily: Aim for at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity.
🩺 Get checked: Black men are 50% less likely to see a doctor annually, even with insurance.

Regular checkups save lives!

Let’s change the narrative together. Schedule an appointment today.

Your ZIP code shouldn’t determine how long you live!

The "built environment" (the physical makeup of our streets, buildings, and parks) is a powerful driver of health in our neighborhoods.

When our communities face infrastructure decay, underfunded schools, and a lack of green space, it creates an environment that leads to higher rates of chronic disease.
We are fighting for our health.

What we can do together:
• Be Informed: Understand how local planning affects your well-being.
• Be Vocal: Demand safe places to walk, play, and grow.
• Build Black Wealth: Support community-driven solutions that invest in us.

When we change the neighborhood, we change the outcome. Get involved with the Black Equity Coalition (BEC) today.

Did you know that between 1934 and 1962, 98% of government-subsidized housing went to white families? This is just one of the ways the wealth gap was built in America.

Today, that gap has grown to over $200,000 between the average Black and White household. We believe that understanding our history is the first step toward fixing our future.

Let’s work to increase home ownership and financial literacy and improve access to business loans in our communities. 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾

Help us share this information with your friends and family. Let’s work to build a legacy of wealth for the next generation.

May is National Walking Month, and we are celebrating the resilience and beauty of our Pittsburgh community. 👣

From the historic trails of in the Hill District to the wooded paths of on the East End, our steps are an act of self-care and community reclamation.

Why are we stepping up this month?
· For Our Hearts: 30 mins a day significantly lowers the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure—issues that hit our community the hardest.
· For Our Peace: Walking is a natural stress-reliever. Clear your head and take in the Steel City scenery.
· For Our Community: Walking is better together. Organize a stroll with friends, family, or your church group!

You don’t have to do it all at once! Three 10-minute walks are just as effective as one long session.

Let’s get moving, y’all! 🖤💛

Drop a photo of your favorite PGH walking spot in the comments! 👇🏾

Did you know that Black women in Pittsburgh face maternal mortality rates higher than 97% of similar U.S. cities?

In Allegheny County, the joy of a new baby is too often met with a systemic failure of equity. This is about a fixable system.

The PA Maternal Mortality Review Committee found that 98% of these deaths are preventable.

From the Federal Act to the 2.0, there is a movement working to protect Black birthing people and their babies.

It’s time to move from acknowledging the problem to implementing solutions like 12-month postpartum Medicaid coverage and culturally congruent care.
