PITTSBURG PRODIGIES ROADTRIP TO BIGFOOT POETRY FESTIVAL 2026 PORTLAND OREGON!!

Last summer the Prodigies and Youth Speaks Seattle dreamed up a west coast youth poetry meet up at the most prestigious adult poetry comp in the country, Bigfoot Poetry Festival and a year later and much organizing later we made it happen!! In My Section will be fielding a team for the national comp and individual youth poets for the youth slam 🔥🔥🔥Much love to Perdis and Julia from Seattle and Bigfoot for being comrades in the organizing, and much love to our funders East Bay Community Foundation and Supervisor Shanelle Scales-Preston for making the this financially possible. The adventure begins, vámonos!!

IN MY SECTION STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Deputy Director and OG PRODIGY GABRIEL PEREZ CANO!! CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATE!!!🪶🧡🌿

For those who don’t already know this legend, Gabriel is a Chicano orgulloso born and raised here in the P, and joined the original PHS Slam Club back in 2017 as a sophomore. He went on to become one of the founding members of the Pittsburg Prodigies in 2019, now one of the most successful you poetry teams in the county. He has been serving his community and putting on for Raza ever since, including key leadership roles in LMCs Puente program, LantinE Club, LatAm club, F.I.R.M.E, and of course In My Section. Gabriel IS In My Section, and has filled every role imaginable to run our shows, after school programs, and yearly travel for competition. He has served as keynote speaker and a featured poet for rallies and shows across the deep east, and has been honored with Legacy awards and community awards from LMC and IMS. Gabriel comes to every practice, every show, and is there for EVERYONE!! This is what REAL COMMUNITY DEDICATION looks like! Gabriel’s legacy is cemented as a man of the people, an exceptional organizer and poet, and as a young man who embodied off the streets, onto stages. We are forever in your debt 🤲🏼🌿

Gabe crossed the stage on Friday to receive his AA, and is officially enrolling at SFSU in the fall, majoring in Chicano Studies and Native American studies 🥹🪶Gabriel we love you carnal, bien hecho. ¡Órale! Xayaatspanee ota miko, yaxap’!!

📸: FIRE IN MY SECTION ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: SOOS (also known as iiamsoos) is a rising musical artist and singer-songwriter known for his eclectic, indie-inspired sound. His music often features a blend of indie-pop and R&B, drawing frequent comparisons to artists like Steve Lacy and Malcolm Todd for his guitar-driven melodies and soulful vocals.

FIRE IN MY SECTION: Words are not enough!! We are so proud of this show, the youth who bravely took the stage, and the incredible lead artists for building this memory for our community. This show is why we do it, why we fight for our artists, why we pour into their gifts—our youth have everything they need already in them! We laughed and cried and TURNED UP in the P on that Thursday, but above all we left high on the knowledge that we can ALWAYS find a way, and that our only ceilings are the ones we make ourselves. MIL GRACIAS to the city for showing love, to the orgs who supported the vision, and to the ARTISTS for shining with us! Through the many Fires of our times we are fortified, unified, and unafraid. WE OFF THE STREETS AND ONTO STAGES!! THE DREAM DONT STOP!!
