Stop Sheriff Livingston’s attempt to hide degrading conditions and rights abuses inside West County Detention Center, and retaliate against those who seek to daylight them

BACKGROUND:
Today Sheriff Livingston ordered the termination of visitation rights for the Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement, or CIVIC, a San Francisco group that monitors jails and provides visitation and case review for detainees. CIVIC is the organization that brought to light the alleged abuse of female detainees in the West County Detention Facility (WCDF).

CIVIC characterized the shutdown as “retaliation for First Amendment-protected expression, as the Sheriff's Office is clearly attempting to silence its critics and limit the public’s awareness of conditions in the detention facility.”

ACTION:
Let our electeds, all of whom endorsed Livingston for re-election to stand up and step in the reverse this decision, and rescind their endorsements once and for all. PLEASE SIGN THE FOLLOWING PETITIONS and SHARE WIDELY:

It was recently announced that Sheriff David Livingston has decided to end the West County Detention Facility's (WCDF) partnership with CIVIC (Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement).

CIVIC is devoted to ending the isolation of people currently suffering in detention centers across the United States. In many cases, CIVIC volunteers are the last hope that immigrants in detention have. They have nothing else.

Remember that David Livingston went all the way to DC to shake hands and do a photo-op with Jeff Sessions. Not only is Jeff Sessions obsessed with jailing people of color but today he announced a ridiculous lawsuit against the state of California and its mission to protect undocumented families.

BREAKING NEWS: ( ) was signed into law today by Governor Brown!

The California Values Act will challenge Trump's xenophobic agenda. The new law will advance protections for immigrants in communities across the state, ending a number of shameful local deportation practices altogether and setting limits on other abuses.

As we celebrate this milestone, we also know California must do much more to embrace the humanity of all who call our state home, including Californians criminalized by racially biased systems of mass incarceration. We will keep fighting to raise the bar for due process and equal treatment statewide.

Congratulations to all those especially our immigrant community members who advocated for this important legislation.
