WHISPERS AMONG THE STONES

A Halloween Evening of History & Remembrance

This Halloween, the Indian Stream Schoolhouse invites you to step into the past for a spooky, atmospheric walk through a historic cemetery, where every gravestone holds a story, and every name is a piece of our local history. Meet us at the schoolhouse at 4:30, or for a shorter walk, catch up with us in front of The Indian Stream Cemetery on Tabor Road in Pittsburg.

Along the way, our guided tour will pause at selected gravestones to share the history and personal stories of those laid to rest beneath them. Discover who these individuals were, the lives they lived, the challenges they faced, and the roles they played in shaping our community.

Stand at the final resting place of Mary Sommers, one of the schoolteachers who once taught at the historic Indian Stream Schoolhouse. Hear the story of her journey to Pittsburg, what brought her to this remote northern community, and the path her life took along the way. As we gather beside her gravestone, step back in time and discover the woman behind the name etched in stone.

Not every ghost story needs a ghost. Sometimes, the truth is haunting enough.

And when the walk is over, join us back at the Indian Stream Schoolhouse to gather around the warmth of the outdoor fire, enjoy hot apple c***r and delicious donuts, and share in the spirit of this special Halloween evening.

We’re thrilled to share this exciting update with everyone who loves the Indian Stream Schoolhouse—our friends, family, and community. Thanks to a generous grant from a New Hampshire funder, along with your support, we’ve secured the resources for a much-needed new roof. Check out an advance copy of our press release below!

The Indian Stream Schoolhouse Receives Full Grant Funding for Roof Replacement

PITTSBURG, N.H. — The Indian Stream Historic Schoolhouse Project is pleased to announce receipt of a grant award to fully fund the replacement of the roof on the historic Indian Stream Schoolhouse in Pittsburg, New Hampshire.

The funding will support the complete replacement of the roof on the one-room schoolhouse, addressing a threat to both the structural integrity of the building and decades of volunteer-led restoration work. Once completed, the project will ensure the long-term preservation of one of the region’s significant historic landmarks.

Originally operating as a school from 1893 to 1939, the Indian Stream Schoolhouse is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the New Hampshire Register of Historic Places. Today, the building serves as a community learning center and local history site, welcoming residents, visitors, and school groups interested in the heritage of the North Country.

“This generous gift allows us to address one of the most critical preservation needs facing the schoolhouse,” said Ken Lundberg of the Indian Stream Historic Schoolhouse Project. “We are deeply grateful for this support and commitment to protect historic sites and supporting educational opportunities for communities.”

For nearly 40 years, restoration of the schoolhouse has been led by the Amey family, who have personally invested in the preservation of the building, supported by dozens of volunteers and community partners. The schoolhouse continues to host educational programs, historical events, and community gatherings.

Preserving a North Country Landmark

The Indian Stream Historic Schoolhouse Project is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in 2007 to preserve and share the history of the Indian Stream region. With minimal operating costs and strong community support, the organization focuses its resources on historic preservation, educational programming, and community engagement.

“This grant not only protects the schoolhouse today,” Dianna (Amey) Lundberg noted, “it ensures that future generations will continue to learn about the unique history of the Indian Stream region in the very place where local children once gathered to learn.”

We recently received a wonderful addition to our collection—a book originally presented to Linnie Young in recognition of perfect attendance in 1905. We extend our sincere thanks to Heather Gray for generously donating this piece of schoolhouse history.

On a morning when temperatures dipped to five below zero, the schoolhouse windows offered a striking reminder of the beauty and resilience of this historic space.

Beneath a quilt of winter’s lace,
The Indian Stream Schoolhouse keeps its place.
Lamplight glows on weathered pine,
Where sums and letters stood the test of time.

Boot prints crunch on frozen ground,
A horse-drawn sleigh makes a gentle sound.
Woolen coats and breath like steam,
Children gather with Christmas dreams.

High on the roof, where the bell once rang,
Santa pauses with a mittened clang.
A tip of his cap, a knowing smile,
Honoring a place that’s stood awhile.

Through wars and winters, chalk and slate,
This little schoolhouse learned to wait—
For laughter, hope, and candle’s gleam,
And Christmas nights by Indian Stream.
