Heart2heartnc invites you to "Death & Cupcakes: Let's Talk About Death with Frank Phoenix."

In our culture, we often avoid conversations about death until we are forced to face it. This gathering creates a safe space for open, honest dialogue about one of life’s most universal experiences.
Event Details:

Frank Phoenix will lead the session using a way-of-council approach. Participants will gather in a circle to share stories and beliefs, while also exploring practical aspects of the dying process—such as physical changes and pain management—to bring light to a topic often left in the shadows. Cupcakes will be provided.

About the Facilitator:Frank (Byrd) Phoenix is a Professional Engineer and philanthropist who has served as President of a foundation supporting systemic and cultural change since 1999. He is dedicated to connecting with the Earth through prayer and humility while striving for a more just and beautiful world.

Join us for the last Grief in Motion in the Yoga Garden space. 🙏🏼

We will cultivate specific practices during times of grief that help us find ease in our bodies and minds. Our time together includes guided movements taken from the Kundalini yoga tradition, breath-work, stillness, and conversation, plus live music and sound.

This recalibration allows us to build new neural pathways to prevent our minds from falling into old patterns of physical and emotional pain. We will also include periods of stillness that allow for integration of the physical and emotional work. These sessions conclude with a voluntary opportunity to share for those who wish to do so.

heart2heart believes that these modalities of healing are important and accessible to all humans seeking to heal their sorrows and to remember their sacred path in life.

Gaining national attention, Death Cafes have become part of a global movement, with more than 20,000 gatherings held in 93 countries. By helping to normalize conversations about mortality, Death Cafes can ease anxiety, build supportive community, foster compassion, and strengthen emotional resilience.

As one participant shared, “It’s always interesting, and it’s good for people to realize that talking about death certainly won’t kill you.”

Another reflected, “There’s something powerful about being in a room with your peers, talking openly about death and what it means.”

As a choir warmed up downstairs, they gathered – some strangers, some friends - to discuss a topic that’s normally off-limits: death.

While there is no roadmap for grief, discovering ways to navigate it can bring healing. At Death & Cupcakes, we gently turn toward death instead, creating a safe space for open, honest dialogue about one of life’s most universal experiences.
Together, we gather in a circle and follow a way-of-council approach: speaking one at a time, listening deeply, and honoring every voice. We share stories, experiences, and beliefs while also exploring the practical realities of death and dying—such as the body’s natural changes, managing pain, and what to expect as life draws to a close.
Please join us as Frank Phoenix guides this gathering, helping bring light to a topic too often left in the shadows.

During this special event, co-sponsored by heart2heartnc and Sacred Path Community, Tom will read powerful excerpts from Superman’s Adventure with Prostate Cancer and share reflections from his personal journey. The proceeds from book sales are donated to Healing Cancer Journeys, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides education and fosters community for people exploring psychedelic medicines in their cancer journey.
