When an animal is surrendered or taken in as a sanctuary animal, their cost is on the rescue, unless the previous owner is able to send or provide money for upkeep. Often part of their surrender is a promise to not adopt them out, which we try our best to honor.
But what does an animal cost? We aim for transparency!

We have 19 equines - $ 1785 to feed/farrier equines

eat the remaining hay. It's hard to divide perfectly, but that's roughly $๐ญ๐ณ.๐ฑ๐ฌ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฟ๐๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ป๐ for one month.
24 ruminants - $420 to feed ruminants (grateful for grass! ๐)
This is a minimum of $๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐บ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ต just to feed animals. This does ๐ป๐ผ๐ include any medical care (vet visits, shots, wormer, supplies) or any of our adoptable animals such as dogs or cats.
Yes, these bills are staggering. You can see why we rely on donations. You can also see why becoming and maintaining 501c3 status is difficult, and so many cannot (or will not) take in some species. Gosh, we love our animals. And we are constantly saying no. And to understand the need and how much these critters cost makes it all the more heartbreaking.
Another unfortunate situation is that we canโt control when animals get returned. And even if we are closed for intake we ALWAYS take our animals back. It's specified in our contract and just good practice. We don't question, we don't judge, we say 'hey bud, welcome back!'. And that means more resources.
The economy isn't getting any easier. While donations have gone down, hay and grain have increased approximately 15%, just like groceries and other necessary items. We cannot adopt our way out of the current pet overpopulation crisis. Everyone is having a tough time. We need some help to build up our coffers.
