IEEE Life Sciences Welcome to the official IEEE Life Sciences page. Learn more at http://lifesciences.ieee.org

IEEE has been involved in and continues to richly seed several life science disciplines. Within IEEE there is a variety of ongoing research in areas of convergence, publications, conferences, and educational outreach. As a transition from the Life Sciences Initiative which was approved by the IEEE Board of Directors in 2010, the IEEE Life Sciences Technical Community (LSTC) became operational in 2

014. LSTC fosters collaboration and communication among an array of IEEE Societies making contributions in the Life Sciences, to provide a broad-based home for IEEE members who are interested in some aspect of the life sciences. LSTC also seeks to create a virtual community for stakeholders that have interests in technology and its application in life sciences, including technology companies, hospitals, pharmaceutical company researchers, and university researchers. With the breadth of the organization, IEEE is able to provide a wide diversity of expertise, information, resources, and the vision necessary to realize the full potential of rapidly-advancing life science fields.

Silk is incredibly strong. Now researchers are making it even stronger and tougher by feeding silkworms graphene or single-walled carbon nanotubes. The reinforced silk produced by the silkworms could be used in applications such as durable protective fabrics, biodegradable medical implants, and ecofriendly wearable electronics.

The strong, conductive material could be used for wearable electronics and medical implants, researchers say
