When evaluating a child's language abilities, we often count the number of words in their lexicon. However, the structural depth of that lexicon is arguably more critical for long-term academic success. Semantic mappingโ€”specifically through Categorisation and Associationโ€”is the scaffolding of higher-order thinking.

Understanding words is an important part of communication! ๐ŸŒฑ Receptive language helps children understand questions, follow directions and make sense of what others say. Use simple language, visual support and give children enough time to process and respond. ๐Ÿ’™

One skill, One minuite, One Meaningful Step
๐Ÿ”Š Hearing is just receiving sound. Auditory processing is understanding it.
๐Ÿ’ก To support neurodivergent learners, simplify communication to one clear direction at a time.

Give the child time to process. ๐Ÿง
When you ask a question, pause and wait. A child may need a few extra seconds to understand the words, process the meaning, organize their thoughts, and then respond. Donโ€™t repeat the question too quickly. Donโ€™t answer for them. Donโ€™t interrupt the thinking process.
Sometimes, the pause is where learning happens. โค๏ธ

Sequencing means arranging steps, events, or information in a logical, chronological, or step-by-step order. It helps you to see how one event leads to the next in a story or history and makes it easier to follow instructions

Social language processing is how our brain understands what others say, what they mean, their emotions, tone, facial expressions, and the situation around us. ๐Ÿง
In this series, we explore how children process social language and learn to communicate meaningfully with others. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Expressive Language is how children use words, sentences, gestures, and communication to express their thoughts, needs, ideas, and feelings. โค๏ธ
Helping children build expressive language gives them the confidence to communicate, connect, and be understood. ๐ŸŒฑ
