IEEE REACH

IEEE REACH REACH offers resources that bring to life the history of technology and engineering in the classroom.

REACH offers a one-stop shop of resources that bring to life the history of technology and engineering in the classroom. According to the NCSS (National Council of Social Studies), “History, a field that straddles the humanities and the social sciences, is the ideal channel for demonstrating how science and technology operate in society.” IEEE REACH offers an opportunity to expose students to the

different ways that science and technology interrelate and play out in society. Resources include: Inquiry Units based on the “C3 Framework”, primary and secondary sources, hands-on-activities, multimedia sources (video and audio), background information for teachers, and additional resources. In addition to the REACH site being fully text searchable, resources may be searched by context, i.e. Inquiry Unit, or Primary Source, or by 9 themes: agriculture, manufacturing, materials & structures, energy, communication, transportation, information processing, medicine & healthcare, and warfare. A search may be broken down even further by era, geography, and by World History AP themes.

More than 200 students from across South Africa came together for the IEEE-UNESCO STEM Bootcamp in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in STEM.

Over two immersive days, predominantly female learners built light bulbs, designed skyscrapers, explored space science, and examined how technology shapes society — and how society shapes technology.

But perhaps the most powerful lesson wasn’t about circuits or structures. It was about resilience. When experiments didn’t work the first time, students experienced what every inventor in history has learned: persistence matters.

Programs like this show what happens when hands-on engineering meets historical perspective and strong mentorship.

There is no limit to what they can do.

Come and listen to REACH Senior Program Manager, Kelly McKenna, present about "Youth STEMpreneurs" at the 2025 mEducation Alliance Symposium taking place from 7-9 October 2025 in Arlington, Virginia.

This year’s symposium theme is "The Marvelous Education Alliance" and presentations will be featured across a variety of sub-themes ranging from digital literacy, foundational numeracy and literacy, STEM education and more…

The mEducation Alliance is the largest convening platform of development and donor agencies focused on technology for education, particularly in low-resource countries. Their annual Symposia attracts policymakers, donors, many implementing partners in education, and researchers from around the world, who come together to connect and learn from one another.

For more information about the event, including how to apply as a general attendee, please visit the event page.

As a provider of free resources for educators, we often do not see the direct impact we have in the classroom. So, it is wonderful to discover this video by APS DHAI II Girls Sec F in Pakistan using the IEEE REACH magnetic compass hands-on activity!

The students' willingness to learn about the social relevance of technology, through the lens of history, will provide them with critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will aid them throughout their lifetime. We hope they use what they learn to contribute their own ideas about how science, technology and innovation may impact their lives and their future. Our wish for them is to stay curious and to believe in themselves and what they will accomplish. We are proud of them!
