The Pipestone Area Community Foundation (PACF) launched the fundraising effort for the rehabilitation of the Carnegie Library yesterday at the Pipestone County Fair with a 250 for 250 campaign. With 250 community members giving $250 (on the 250th anniversary of our country) we can raise $62,000 to get the project started while the City other local historic preservation organizations work on securing grants and additional donations.

The City has a grant in hand to stabilize and rebuild the east wall. That project has been bid and work will begin in the fall of 2026. PCAF is spearheading a fund drive to replace the roof. As a historic building, special attention will be given to the type of materials used in this project. Cost estimates are $150,000 or more using historic-looking modern materials.

In 1904 the community of Pipestone was awarded a grant from the Carnegie Foundation to build a public library building. The community made it their own by designing it around the local building stone, Sioux quartzite, and making it one of Pipestone’s keystone buildings.

The importance of this building to the community cannot be denied. In 1950 its first major renovation was completed. The community used the building as a public library until 1975, when the public library and the school library were merged. In 1977 its second major renovation began, transforming the building into a Senior Center.

With the closure of the Senior Center in 2020, the community is rallying for a third renovation to the historic building, this time transforming it into a public space with potential office space for the Pipestone Area Chamber of Commerce and CVB.
