It’s TAKEOVER TUESDAY with Parrot Ps and Qs!

How many times have you heard someone describe a bird as “sweet?” Or maybe “nice?”

I know I get asked a lot if a bird I’m training is sweet or if it’s a nice bird. I rarely pass up a teaching moment so I smile sweetly and ask, “What do you mean by that?”

Usually the person will pause and then ask whether the bird bites. I respond with an enthusiastic, “Yes! All birds bite!”

Then we get to have a conversation about WHY a bird might (or might not) bite - the conditions in which a bite might (or might not) occur. Look how much more information we get when we don’t use a label like “sweet” or “nice!”

Here’s a PPQ challenge - listen and be on the lookout for any word that we use that tries to describe what a bird IS rather than what it is DOING.

Bet you can think of some great examples! Put them in the comments section below.

Meet Cutie, Cinnamon & Twix❤️ These three sweet cockatiels giving the camera a stare down are all available for adoption! Their majestic crests perked up just brings an instant smile to your face. Cockatiels have a wonderful loving nature. It’s a bonus that their noise level is a bit lower than the larger parrots too. If you are interested in bringing one, some, or all of these precious birdies home with you, please reach out.

Adoptable Bird: Clarence the Quaker! This feisty boy needs a family to love him and also to help preen the pin feathers from his sweet noggin! Sometimes green quakers can get overlooked, people thinking they’re not as interesting as more colorful birds. But Quakers are very smart and funny! They can learn tricks, to speak, and have their own hilarious personalities. If you’re interested in Clarence, please reach out! This guy has been waiting a long time.
We are in Pineville NC
Adoption fee is $200

Adoptable Birds: please meet Cricket, Worm, Bella, Peggy, Sunny & Snowy!
This is a beautiful ready made flock of budgies! These guys are in some pairs (Cricket & Worm, Sunny & Snowy) and some single budgies. Or… you could adopt the whole wonderful flock and keep all the friends together! This group has just about a budgie of every color and they make the happiest chirps all day long. Please don’t think because budgies are a small size that they have any less personality than the bigger parrots! Give a budgie a chance ❤️ they just may surprise you.

Adoptable Bird: Chicken! Chicken is a shy & sweet green cheek conure with the brightest feathers! She is cautious, her bright eyes watching you from the moment you enter the room. Chicken has a quieter noise level than larger parrots (though there are no “quiet” parrots!) so she could be very happy in an apartment, condo, or home! But most of all, Chicken wants a family of her very own. If you think that might be you, please reach out!
Conure adoption fee is $200

It's TAKEOVER TUESDAY with Parrot Ps and Qs!

Someone brilliant said, "When we know better, we do better!" Some form of that is often attributed to Maya Angelou. I think it applies beautifully to parrot people.

In the '70s and '80s we had some people giving advice on how to treat parrots in the home. They weren't particularly science-based but they often gave good (or better) information.

Starting in the '90s we had more access to science-based information and that trend has exploded and is still rising today.

We're understanding that we can train all members of the parrot family, just as we can train dogs and cats and horses and...well, you get the idea. Animals that were once considered "untrainable" or "incapable of learning" are proving these ideas w-r-o-n-g!

Do you have a bird that has had multiple homes in its lifetime, as I do? That individual is still capable of learning!

Got a bird that may have been exposed to some heavy-handed techniques, punishment, abuse? Still capable of learning!

An old bird? Young bird? You guessed it - capable of learning on both fronts.

Here's a recommendation: take classes. Take them more than once so that you digest the information. Never assume you've learned all there is to know. Information changes and we need to stay up to date.

Over your head or frustrated? Hire a professional behavior consultant and/or trainer. It is absolutely worth the investment in your relationship with your parrot and their future in your home.
