Pinetops Community Garden

Pinetops Community Garden Mission - To build a stronger, healthier community by working together, growing together, and learning together. in Conetoe, NC.

The Pinetops Community Garden is an extension of the Conetoe Family life Center, Inc. The garden is designed to provide fresh vegetables for people in need. It is also designed to help children learn about the value of gardening. The teachers in the local schools plan to use the garden as a learning lab, and the employees at the Vidant Family Medical Clinic plan to use the garden to benefit some o

f their patients. Partners include: Pinetops Presbyterian Church, The Town of Pinetops, local resident Marshall Dunn, Vidant Hospital, Edgecombe County public schools, Edgecombe Community College, Lowes of Tarboro, CuriosiTees, the Boy Scouts, and many local citizens who are helping to shape and sustain this garden project. Currently, there are 24 rows of vegetables which were planted by children in local schools, which are expected to yield 2,000 lbs of fresh produce. The program began with a memorial donation given to the family of Ann and Vines Cobb. Ann was a singer, a music teacher, choir director, promoter of the arts, and an enthusiastic supporter of community endeavors. Vines was a long-time Pinetops banker, member of the Board of Education, member of the Edgecombe County Board of Commissioners, and Mayor of Pinetops. He served as an elected official for 50 years. Ann and Vines served their church, town, county, and state. This garden is meant to honor their lifetime of community service. The community garden program has brought a wonderful, diverse group of people together who have made the garden a reality. Folks are receiving countless blessings from working together. A "Blessing of the Garden" ceremony was held Sunday morning, June 11th at 9:00 am. The community gathered at the garden to give thanks for the work that has been done and for the work yet to come.

Pinetops Presbyterian welcomes the Reverend Claire Colcord as our Pastoral Care pastor. After serving in churches as far away as New Jersey and Tokyo, Claire began serving as the Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Wilson. Claire is a staunch believer that God never asks us to “check our brains at the door”; she enjoys tough theological questions and biblical tensions, lively debate, deep discussion, and not having all the answers. She has four grown daughters (and 4 terrific sons-in-law, 8 adorable grandchildren, and several grand dogs) sprinkled across the United States.

Monday, March 5th, 40 students from South Edgecombe and Carver helped plant cabbage, broccoli, potatoes, onions, kale, turnips, mixed salad, blueberry and blackberry bushes. The first planting of 2018 was a great success. Please ride by the garden, watch it grow and feel free to stop and pull a w**d or two whenever you have time. In eight to twelve weeks, we hope to have some fresh veggies for everyone to pick, to enjoy and to share.

The community garden is partnering with Down East Partnership for Children and Carver Elementary to sponsor a Community Gardening Event at Carver School two Saturday mornings in June (June 9 & June 16). The event will target grades K-3 children and parent(s)/guardian(s) and will focus on Gardening, Literacy, and Nutrition. This event will require an application which will be distributed to students and families after Spring Break. More information will follow.

We will plan a second planting for summer vegetables mid-April.

Our next meeting will be at Pinetops Presbyterian Church April 9th at 6:00. Please put this date on your calendars.

Thanks for your interest and involvement in this community mission project.
