NCSO Warns Community of Financial Scam Targeting Local Residents
Holbrook, AZ: The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) is warning residents about a financial scam that has recently affected members of our local community and has been reported in other areas of Arizona.
The scam typically begins with a fraudulent bank or credit card security text, followed by a phone call from someone claiming to represent a fraud department. The scammers tell victims their accounts have been compromised and may claim employees at the victim’s local bank are involved.
The scammers then instruct victims to withdraw large amounts of cash while remaining on the phone and coach them on what to tell bank employees if questioned. Victims may then be directed to give the cash to a “courier” or rideshare driver in a bank parking lot. In some cases, the driver may be unaware they are being used as part of a scam.
In a recent Navajo County case, a victim lost approximately $14,000. The suspects attempted to obtain an additional $6,000, but a rideshare driver recognized the warning signs, told the victim he was being scammed, and encouraged him to return the money to the bank.
NCSO deputies are aware of this scam and are working proactively to prevent additional victims. An NCSO Community Resource Deputy recently visited banks throughout Navajo County to provide information about the scam. Banks in Holbrook and Winslow reported encountering versions of this scam locally.
Residents should be suspicious of anyone who:
Claims bank employees are involved in fraud.
Instructs you to withdraw large amounts of cash.
Tells you to remain on the phone during a bank transaction.
Coaches you on what to tell bank employees.
Directs you to give money to a courier, rideshare driver, or other third party.
No legitimate law enforcement agency or financial institution will ask you to withdraw cash and give it to a courier as part of an investigation.
If you receive a suspicious call or text, stop communicating with the individual and contact your financial institution directly using a verified phone number.
If you believe you have been targeted by this or a similar scam, contact your local law enforcement agency or Navajo County Dispatch at 928-524-4050.

The White Mountain Community Center invites you to the Second Annual Unity 5K!

⏰ Race begins at 11:00 AM
📍 Woodland Lake Park, Ramada #5

Choose your side, dress the part, and join us for a fun-filled 5K celebrating unity, inclusion, and community! All participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite hero or villain. Costumes can be creative, funny, dramatic, or completely homemade—just come ready to have a super time!

The Unity 5K welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. Walk, run, roll, or stroll at your own pace. Food and water will be available at Ramada #5 after the race.

Join us at the White Mountain Community Center for our Murder Mystery Masquerade Party on Saturday, October 24! Put on your most mysterious mask, follow the clues and see if you can solve the crime before the final reveal. 🔎

Join us for delicious weekday lunches, including chicken fajitas, lasagna, smoked pork sliders, taco salad, meatloaf or liver, and much more. Our soup and salad bar is available daily!

September activities include BINGO, chair aerobics, yoga, Tai Chi, live music, quilting, card games, LGBTQ+ support groups, Reiki sound baths, Potluck & Jive, our 60+ Potluck Mixer, Soup Fest, and plenty more!

We are always looking for new ways to support the community and thanks to a heartwarming story of the passing of a wonderful person named Batman we bring you our Kind Line.  Kind Line is a thoughtful phone check-in service designed for members of the White Mountains community in Arizona. Our mission is to bring warmth and reassurance to your daily routine, so you always feel cared for and connected. Each morning, participants receive a friendly text message at 9:00 AM inviting them to respond, letting us know they have made it safely through the night. For those who choose to opt in to our wellness check feature, if we have not heard from you within 24 hours within our normal business hours, we will reach out to local authorities to request a well-being check on your behalf.
